In this groundbreaking book Mira Ariel challenges the prominent definitions of pragmatics, as well as the widely-held assumption that specific topics - implicatures, deixis, speech acts, politeness - naturally and uniformly belong on the pragmatics turf. She reconstitutes the field, defining grammar as a set of conventional codes, and pragmatics as a set of inferences, rationally derived. The book applies this division of labor between codes and inferences to many classical pragmatic phenomena, and even to phenomena considered 'beyond pragmatics'. Surprisingly, although some of these turn out pragmatic, others actually turn out grammatical. Additional intriguing questions addressed in the book include: why is it sometimes difficult to distinguish grammar from pragmatics? Why is there no grand design behind grammar nor behind pragmatics? Are all extragrammatical phenomena pragmatic?

This is not a novel, it is a non fiction book comparing and contrasting myths and legends about unicorns. I have not finished it yet, and I have enjoyed this series of books so far (wizards, fairies, vampires, dragons and mermaids), but it has some interesting facts about the unicorn lore. Some is fluff, but there was some real research involved and overall, I have really enjoyed it.

Beautiful, fun book!

This book arrived in excellent condition. I have not read it fully only flipped through paragraphs. I purchased this for my step daughter. We have the mermaid as well. She loves it! I'm sure she will love one as well.

Just a warning. Some of these books have aspects of them that are not suitable or easily under by children I would recommend them for preteens and upward. For younger kids, just read book to them and censor the parts you feel may be above their understanding.

If you are in the process of moving your first steps in Object Oriented Programming, and find it too abstract, or you get it "in theory" but have difficulties in grasping what it's all about in practice..or are simply just confused this video series might be helpful.. Simon Allardice is as always a super tech speaker.. I think OO in my sleep but I still enjoyed watching this just out of the curiosity of seeing how he approached the subject and for the sheer pleasure of hearing him speak about tech topics. I know, I am might not be totally "normal" :)
Anyhow.. if you want a short and sweet introduction to the pillars of OO, abstraction, encapsulation, inheritance and polymorphism, some basic element of UML, use cases , the OO design process and its main principles, this video series might help. But make no mistake, to fully comprehend and appreciate this material you will need to learn from trial and error, success and mistakes..and the more mistakes you make, the better.. :) In a word, experience.

Beautiful Book

O my God. I have never admired a math book soo much.(except my pre-cal) I am serious. It is SOO easy to undersand...No mumbo-jumbo language. Plain Simple ENGLISH.. I took it for Cal. one and Two. I had taken to take cal one during 5 week intense course. Screwed up big time. I partially blamed swokoskski cal. one book (sp?), and partially my teacher.. ofcourse I don't wanna blame myself =).. LoL.. Nevertheless.. This book was light at end of the tunnel.

Well written, well designed

I purchased this book as a remedy for my struggles with the Calculus: Early Transcendentals volume by Stewart. The two are like night and day. Stewart's exposition is, at best, of uneven quality, and all too often seems not to illuminate at all. The Anton, Bivens, and Davis (hereafter ABD) has marvelous clarity of exposition, well ordered, logical, and illuminating. The exercise sets in Stewart are apparently intended to provoke a stream of epiphanies--before having given sufficient practice to cement understanding--but fail to do so. The ABD exercises increase more linearly in difficulty, providing greater understanding and giving the student a solid grip on the concepts of the chapter. In short, ABD succeeds, and Stewart fails.

If you examine the reviews of Stewart's volume, you will find the most scathing are written by instructors who used the book. My own second semester instructor was a big Stewart fan, but I engaged her in many discussions on specific issue I found, and reviewed with her the alternate presentation in ABD; she found she agreed with me, again and again, and she was a master's candidate in math at the time.

This book is an excellent volume, if what you need is to actually understand calculus.

Good book to learn calculus

I purchased these books because these are the ones I use in my calculus AB class. They were firtst recommended by the district and I do supplement work to prepare students for the AP test, but the books have plenty of prblems to do and it is not difficult to read.

The Scions

The Scions of Shannara is a fictional book with classic adventures and romances. The story tajes place in the Four Lands. There are different races like the dwarves, elves, humans and several others.
Three hundred years have passed since Allanon the Druid died. The Four Lands have changed since then. The Elves have vanished and the Dwarves have been enslaved. The Southland is under the rule of the Federation. However, Par Ohmsford still has the power of the wishong. Allanon's spirit summoned Par and Coll and a few others to rid the Four Lands of the dangerous shadowen.
Par's cousin Wren has to find the elves. His uncle, Walker, has to bring back the Druids Keep in Paranor, and Par and Coll have to find the Sword of Shannara. Once all the quests are complete, the Four Lands will be back to normal.
I would recommend that you read the first Shannara books before you read this one. Several of the characters are descended from previous characters and knowing the history helps to understand the book.
Terry Brooks' writing style is one of a kind. He focuses on description and details so that one can see everything. When Brooks describes a character, it is thorough and one might find them selves agreeing or disagreeing with a characters thoughts.
I liked the book because there was a little bit of suspense and mystery. Just when you think you have figured it out, something else happens to twist the story around. The end of the story is surprising and it makes you want to read the rest of the series of Shannara.
There were some things I didn't like about the book. For one thing, it was kind of repetative. I read all the books before the Scions of Shannara and they were pretty much the same. Another thing was the characters didn't interact much. Sometimes, in the book, it would be days before anyone talked to someone else.
Overall, I thought that this book was unique because even though the story line has been seen before, Terry Brooks came up with new ideas that suited the setting and made it his own.

Really Good Book

I have never even heard of the Shannara before. I bought book 3 when I was in grade 8. It sat on the bookshelf for about 7 years. I was sitting at home and began to read it. I couldn't put the book down. I read to about page 100 and my dad told me I shouldn't start a series without reading the first book first. So I went to the Grande Prairie Public Library and got out The Scions Of Shannara. I read this book in about 4 or 5 days. I loved it. It had a good story line. The way Terry Brooks, described Par Ohmsford, kind of made him sound like a bad ass. Which describes me. So I really liked it. I am just starting book 2 and am on about page 120 and it is still the same. The Shannara Heritage is very interesting, and would reccommend it to anyone. Especially if your still young and exploring the library's to see whats out there

A really good book (The Scions of Shannara).

It follows in the footsteps of the Shannara Trilogy, with more magic and more energy that keep you guessing and hoping and right on the edge of your seat. It was a very well written and exciting book and I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

He remembers his first love affair, and the girl he ran away with, and the weeks they spent wandering about the countryside together. Briefly, and matter-of-factly, he describes how he cut off the little finger of his left hand as a ritual gesture of apology. He explains how the games were run and the profits spent; why the ties between members of "the brotherhood" were so important; and how he came to kill a man who worked for him.

What emerges is a contradictory personality: tough but not unsentimental; stubborn yet willing to take life more or less as it comes; impulsive but careful to observe the rules of the business he had joined.

And in the end, when his tale is finished, you feel you would probably have liked him if you'd met him in person. Fortunately, Dr. Saga's record of his long conversations with him provides a wonderful substitute for that meeting.

About the Author

Dr. JUNICHI SAGA is a medical doctor with a general practice in Tsuchiura, Ibaraki Prefecture, on Lake Kasumigaura. He began taping his elderly patients' reminiscences about thirty years ago when he realized what a wealth of detail and information they contained. He has published numerous works of local history and ecology, two of which are available in English: Memories of Wind and Waves and Memories of Silk and Straw. In his spare time he does ink painting.

JOHN BESTER, the translator, is one of the foremost translators of Japanese fiction. In 1990 he was given the first Noma Award for the Translation of Japanese Literature, for his English version of a short-story collection by Yukio Mishima entitled Acts of Worship.

I went with her as far as Koiwa, then went on alone to Funabashi, found an eating place where they knew me, and asked them to lend me a kitchen knife.

"Haven't seen you for ages, Eiji," said a cook with a cotton towel bound neatly around his forehead. "What do you want it for?"

"I'm going to use it here, so don't worry. I'll give it back to you right away."

He gave me the knife. I held one end of a bit of string I'd brought with me between my teeth, got hold of the other end with my right hand, and tied it around the little finger of my left hand. I pulled it as tight as I could. Then I chopped off the tip of the finger. The cook just stood there gawping, but it hurt too much for me to bother about him. I cut off one end of the clean white cotton of my bellyband, bound up the finger, then asked him for a sheet of paper. I wrapped the bit of finger in it, and left. I wasn't at all sure that cutting off a finger would be enough to make them let me off, but there wasn't any other way by now. So I set out for Makuta's place in a sort of what-the-hell mood.

When I called out in the entrance, a maid came out, and a young man with her. I introduced myself and said I'd come to apologize, and held out the finger, still wrapped in its piece of paper.

"Just wait there a second, will you?" the man said, and disappeared inside the house. I didn't know whether Makuta was in or not, but I could hear women talking at the back of the house. My hand by now was throbbing like hell, and my kimono was soaked with clammy sweat.

After a while the same man came out again and said, more politely than I'd expected, "The boss says he understands. Now will you please leave?"

"I see," I said. "I'm much obliged." And I bowed and left.

It all went off so simply that I felt kind of let down. After that, I went straight back to Asakusa. On the way, I kept wondering why he'd made so little fuss, but I couldn't make any sense of it. So I assumed my boss must have done the apologizing for me. The boss was back in town by then. He glanced at me when I showed up, and said, "Mind you take yourself a bit more seriously from now on." And that was all he ever said about it.

Bob Dylan: "Confessions a Very Good Read."

I read this book in 2013 or 2014, after learning that Bob Dylan -- a life-time hero of mine and recent Nobel Laureate -- "sampled" ten or so of Mr. Saga's best lines into his (Dylan's), masterly "Love and Theft," after having read it during an overnight stop at Tokyo's Narita Airport. Upon discovery, some critics denounced Dylan's "theft." Dylan just noted that "Confessions" was a darn good book, and Mr. Saga was honored to have inspired the great Bob Dylan.

The Honorable Past.

It may sound odd that I use the word honor in the context of a gangster which is exactly what the yakuza were and are, but the man profiled here is completely old school in all its best connotations. Essentially, the background concerns a very old man about to die who tells his story to the random doctor who happens to examine him. The interviews are conducted over a series of weeks and they occur at the yakuza's home. To say that he lived in interesting times is definitely an understatement. Most of the action occurs before World War II, and, in those days, being a yakuza meant only running gambling houses. To do anything else was beneath them. One can see why the police were rather tolerant in regards to their general operations in light of this eventuality. The man described here eventually became the head of a local branch of the brotherhood, but the stories of his rise and his ever-so-complicated interactions with women were what most impressed this reviewer. This was a pretty fantastic read, and its value is all the greater should you be rather ignorant about Japan (as was the case with this reviewer).

A Charming Gangster

I enjoyed this read because it was a book of personal recollections of a real life Yakuza. Some of the stories were very charming. Even though main character Eiji was likely a bad guy, he came off like a good guy and I found myself rooting for him, hoping that the stories were accurate and true because I wanted to believe they actually happened. I would recommend this book to readers who want to hear stories from a gangster who actually lived the life of a Yakuza.
