Good not great

As a psychologist who works with children on the autism spectrum, I am a big fan of Michelle Garcia-Winner and her idea of Superflex. I have the curriculum book that accompanies this book, so I have the full picture. I have found this book, like her other children's book (You are a Social Detective) to be clumsy and laborious in presenting an otherwise excellent idea. There is way too much text which confuses the story. I have found that I really cannot use it in group therapy because it takes too long to read. I have taken to "editing" it in my own way when reading it to children.

Love this book!

This is the only book/curriculum that has worked on my now 6 yr old. After many frustrating years, it was if a lightbulb turned on and he understood. There are several books that go with this series. I think they are a bit wordy and was very surprised he "got it". But, seeing is believing. These are a life saver.

The choppy layout of beautiful photography featuring many magnificent gardens was very disappointing. I realize that this book has received mostly stellar ratings and reviews. But it seemed to me that there were far too many gardens selected, with brief text and a great many photos crammed onto one page, divided by slivers of white space. It's more of a compendium I think, which is not a bad thing. But this format won't sweep you away visually.

Outstanding Handbook/Catalog to Formal Gardens from Around the World

If you're looking for a catalog of magnificent, well-ordered gardens from around the world, this is your coffee table book. I've paged through this book over and over, as there are so many gardens captured in the book that new ones keep catching my attention.

The book itself is massive and elegant, with it's orange-cream cover made of cloth and brightly colored pages throughout. Yes it's heavy and yes it's a bit expensive. But if you're looking for a book that is all about formal gardens, this is it.

The format of this book is simple: each two-page spread features a single garden, with some textual description of the garden and 6-10 images of the grounds. I noted that the gardens were from Europe, Asia, North America, and a few other global locales.

Things this book is not: It's not a gardening book. It's not a book about small farming or food production. It's not a book about front yard gardening or permaculture. This book is 100% about beautiful formal gardens from around the world.

A sustained ideological campaign vilifying Muslims has been underway since the rise of globalization. Edward Said has shown us that "othering" the "Orient" was essential to colonialism. While this is a seminal notion, a broader overview demonstrates how the "othering" of the Arab East has undergone many stages since the Crusades and how these shifts reflect the changing position of the West. Using examples from Dante to warrior-diplomat Ibn Munqidh's memoirs of the Crusades, we will demonstrate that the relationship between the East and the West in pre-modern times was a relationship between rivals. In contrast to the modern era, each side certainly believed themselves to be the morally and religiously superior without essentially dehumanizing the other. On the other hand, the way the West stereotyped Muslims during the colonial period and Cold War differs in ideological intent and consequences from the vilifying of Muslims since Desert Storm and the rise of a unipolar world. This campaign is not a political "conspiracy" launched by some secret cabal that has taken over the White House. Rather, the campaign is "ideological," emanating from various, even competing, political and cultural strata within American and European society. These competing strata are bound by an ideological position that configures Muslims -- in the Middle East and as immigrants in Europe-- as an obstacle to globalized "humanism," "civilization," "modernity" and liberalism. In this respect, the campaign is less a campaign against Islam the religion than it is against Muslims, those living in a region of critical economic and political interest to the US Empire.

Very poor resource

I've been through most of the first few chapters of the Essential (beginner) book, and it's hard to believe how many mistakes there are. I've been studying Hindi for a while, but wanted a different approach to what I've been studying. And I thought it would be good to have more CDs to listen to. However, this has so far turned out to be somewhat useless. There are two speakers, one male and the other female, and they each pronounce things differently. For a beginning learner, there needs to be a starting point where all speakers pronounce things the same way. For example, for "phir milenge" ("See you later"), one speaker clearly pronounced "phir" with an aspirated "ph". The other speaker clearly pronounced the same word as "fir" with a clear "f" sound. The book shows it as "phir," not "fir."

Examples of mistakes in the book:
1. Hindi incorrectly romanized (e.g., "vah," for the Hindi script (called devanagari) for "ve.")
2. "vah" (that) incorrectly translated as "this."
3. The section on obliques is especially bad, with mistakes and confusing presentation. And one of the quiz questions uses the short form "mujhe," which has not yet been introduced.
4. The translations are often incorrect. Examples:
*On one page, "namaste" is translated as "hello," and "namaskar" as "goodbye." A couple of pages later, "namaskar" is translated as "hello." In fact, both these words are used for "hello" and "goodbye" and are basically interchangeable, although some references will say that namaskar is a bit more formal.
*On one page, "bhai" is translated as "sister" and on another page it is translated as "brother." In fact, "bhai" means "brother."
6. The exercises often ask you to use grammar or vocabulary that isn't introduced until the next section, or perhaps later in the book.
7. The dot used to indicate that a vowel is nasalized is sometimes missing in the Hindi.

I don't know if there are more mistakes in the devanagari itself. It is harder for me to check because I'm not yet that fluent in reading it. But my impression is that most of the mistakes (except for the missing nasalization as noted above) are in the romanization and English translations.

Because of this, I am not sure I want to try to go on to the advanced book. How will I know whether the material is correct or not?

In all fairness, I must say that I like the layout of the pages. The Hindi is all in blue type, which helps me remember it. There is a lot of white space on each page, which helps the material stand out visually, a big help for me. And there are a lot of charts, which I like. It's just too bad that this book wasn't edited or proofed. Also, the binding seems to be better than other books I've had, one of which fell apart after just a few months. But none of this matters if the material presented is incorrect or misleading. Very, very disappointing.

An Okay Textbook

I have been learning Hindi for a long time and I swear I have used every textbook under the sun for it. I was really excited when this living language course came out because I live living language and have used their older textbooks and I have used this version for Arabic which I loved! However although I liked this course, I have to say it's not as good as the older version (which isn't saying much). The problem with this course is that it seems very rushed, there are mistakes, it is disorganized and I really can't imagine a true beginner going through this course alone. I think it would frustrate them a lot. However there are many good things about the course. It comes with a script book that does a wonderful job at teaching on how to read and write the script. Also I love the workbook feel to it, and the exercises are a lot of fun. The audio is also helpful, but to me it went SUPER slow. The course is set up nicely and comes with three books (which goes from beginner to advanced) and three audio cds. The lessons start off with vocabulary and then as you go through there are dialogues and exercises like word matching, fill in the blank, and tests. I would recommend this book if you are in a class or as a supplement. It is useable and not that bad, I was just expecting much better. Still the best book in my opinion to learn Hindi is the "Teach Yourself Hindi" by Rupert Snell. So far nothing has beat it. I really love Living Language though and will still buy their courses.

By far the worst Living Language course out there

Living Language blatantly screwed up this course. There is no organization to this course like in other courses. No dictionary, no insight. This needs to be redone in a way that a total beginner than learn. Once a beginner gets into the second book, you will notice the lack of organization and clumsiness of the lessons. If you want to learn Hindi, use another course. A major problem with the Hindi language is the lack of courses out there for a language spoken by more than 700,000 people. I hear the older Living Language program is better and will most likely borrow it from the local library. Don't throw good money away on this.

My new favorite series, hands down.

Now, I must admit that I found this book by accident. I was researching agents for my own book, and one of them was looking for something along the lines of this series. I had never heard of it, so I looked up some information online, and this one sentence completely grabbed my attention: “What if Cinderella didn’t go to the ball to dance with the prince … but went to kill him instead?”

Now, first let me explain that this is the question the author asked herself when she first started writing the book. Throne of Glass doesn’t really have any of the Cinderella elements left: there’s no evil stepmother, no glass slippers, and no over-worked servant girl. There is a glass castle, a prince, and something sort of like a fairy godmother – but that’s it. Instead, you end up with a fascinating fantasy story with a very unique heroine. I can’t think of another story that had the protagonist be a female assassin – and I don’t mean poisoned lipstick and pointy-hairpins assassin. I mean a real assassin – daggers in the night, ninja-style wall scaling – that sort of thing. The whole book just blew me away, and I’m dying to read the rest of the series. Here’s a little synopsis:

Celaena Sardothien, also known as Adarland’s Assassin – the most feared killer in the world, is sentenced to life in a prison labor camp after she is apprehended. The Prince needs a skilled fighter to participate in a contest within the royal court that will select a King’s Champion, so he hunts down the famous assassin to discover that she’s merely an eighteen-year-old girl. Celaena jumps at the chance to win her freedom, especially since it only requires her to be the last person standing at the end of the challenge. Things aren’t always as easy as they seem, especially when the other challengers start turning up dead. Staying alive might be the hardest challenge Celaena’s faced yet.

Full of gripping action, brief romance, and some hilariously witty passages - Throne of Glass is a marvelous read for almost anyone. The book reads smoothly without sounding childish, and the combination of grisly deaths, fight scenes, subtle romance and magical elements means it has something to offer everyone.

I highly recommend giving this book a try – after all, don’t you want to know if Cinderella manages to kill the Prince?

One of my favorite book/series ever.

OK so this book begins with Celeana being locked up in Endovier for the past year. And the prince and his Captain of the Guard go to offer her a choice: to be his fighter to participate in a royal contest to be the Kings Champion or she can stay in the salt mine prison. She jumps at the chance to win her freedom and to be the killer that she is so feared as, an assassin, all she has to do is be the last person standing. But along the way people are ending up dead. This book has everything you would want from an Assassins meets Cinderella. It has Secret Passages, ghosts, magic, action.. omg so much action, romance, but not as much as you would have thought. I love how this book seamlessly takes the plot lines that began in the novellas and picked them up and just weaved them into the new plot.

Now Celaena, a very young assassin, is 16 or 17, I think many people who dislike this book forget this. They pretend that at that age you are mature and all of your priorities are straight. Well they are not and I think Maas did an amazing job portraying this accurately. I had to remind myself how old she was supposed to be. And even if she had been through so much in her short life I that she still seems to act her age. She owns her damaged self and doesn't let you pity her. She doesn't let the bad things that have happen to her break her or own her. That is my favorite part about her. She takes her life by the horns and keeps going. Bigger and better than ever. I love how cocky, practical, sarcastic she was and her sense of humor.

"My name is Celaena Sardothien and I will not be afraid."

The ending, the world, the characters, the story though... no words. I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone. I just ask you keep in mind the character is 16-17 and will act like one. Everyone is hiding something and there is plenty of action, along with a brief love triangle. Everything that makes a YA book well, a young adult book. As the story grows so does the characters and the story and before you know it you will be so engrossed you cannot put it down.

Buffy the vampire Slayer meets Ripley from Alien

Couldn't put the damn book down! From the moment I started reading I was entranced in a world I had never been yet felt like I had known my whole life. The Assassin is skilled beyond measure but somehow retained her humanity and joy in life regardless of how many kills she has or the year spent in a prison most last days in. She is simply amazing as are the characters she finds as friends through out this first book. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
