Colin Henderson

Colin Henderson is a spatial solutions architect with 14 years of experience working on solutions to complex spatial problems. He is currently the Geospatial Systems Capability Lead for Atkins, one of the world's leading design, engineering, and project management consultancies. Although experienced in a wide range of proprietary GIS software, his current focus is on specializing in the integration of open source software in complex enterprise environments. His most recent projects involve the integration of GeoServer with FME Server from Safe Software and the delivery of spatial web-mapping applications through Esri's ArcGIS for the Server platform and Latitude Geographics' Geocortex framework. Colin is the Technical Architect and Lead Developer of Atkins' open source-based spatial integration platform, CIRRUSmaps™, a solution built on the best breed of open source spatial software, including PostGIS and OpenLayers, with GeoServer at its heart, and designed from the ground-up for deployment in cloud environments. A self-confessed techie, Colin enjoys digging deeper to understand technology and software, and then applying this learning to create innovative solutions to problems. When possible, he likes to "pay it forward" by helping others with their problems, through contributions on GIS Stack Exchange, in particular.

Very good reference for improving the performance and capability of GeoServer

Mastering GeoServer, as suggested on its cover, aims to provide a basis to leverage the power of GeoServer.

The book introduces 12 chapters which open with installation and moves quickly through serving large raster / vector data and complex features, management of output, spatial analysis and finishes with performance monitoring.

While not essential, the target GIS audience should have a familiarity with GeoServer. This review draws on approximately 2 years of empirical knowledge of a working application of GeoServer. The preface cites the precursor “GeoServer Beginners Guide” of the same publisher. Again, while not essential, this reference provided useful bridging material and is recommended here also, however Mastering GeoServer is the first book I have read on this topic.

Mastering GeoServer has very easy to follow type set conventions which are well defined. Icons, tables and screen dumps are sufficiently to support demonstrations and procedures.

The strength of Mastering GeoServer is its content and flow, which is fast moving and tends to focus on prescriptive solutions without getting bogged down with theoretical depth and explanation. This reader was specifically looking for methods for speeding up the serving of very large and high resolution raster mosaic data sets as well as serving, to this point, prohibitively large raster data sets. At the time of this review, some of the solutions for serving these data sets as described in Chapter 2 had been successfully adopted. Similarly, Statewide (Queensland, Australia) vector layers previously too large in the resident environment had been successfully served using techniques suggested in Chapter 3.

The book is highly recommended for those with at the least a beginner knowledge base with GeoServer looking to add functionality and performance to their application.

An excellent tour of GeoServer features

If you are in hurry and a very concise suggestion is enough for you than here it is: buy this book and you won't regret!

I have enjoyed very much to read it. I have been using GeoServer extensively in the last years, so I was very curious to read it. I liked the writing style of the authors, the book is very clear and easy to read.
As suggested by the title the book is more useful for a user that already master the basic concepts of GIS and GeoServer's basic features.
The chapters will guide you trough many interesting topics.
Chapter 1, 2 and 3 guides you to configure a production GeoServer installation and to maximise the performance for raster and vector data.
Chapter 4 gives a very interesting tour of how to publish complex features.
Chapter 5, 6 and 7 focus on how to export maps, both as hard-copy with the printing plugin and tuning the several format GeoServer support as output.
Chapter 8 gives an overview of how a Spatial Data Infrastructure should be designed and what is the role of GeoServer inside it
The remaining chapters cover the use of GeoServer as a geo processor, dealing with security and how to control the health of your installation
To conclude this review: this is really a good book that provide a very good insight to the experienced users.

At first glance the structure of the book reminded me of the way that I have done over the years to gain the necessary knowledge to manage geoserver in enterprise environment, so the first thing I thought reading the book was: this is the manual that I have always wanted.

It guides you through all the steps, and I mean everyone, involved in getting geoserver seamlessly and efficiently integrated into a geospatial infrastructure.
I especially appreciated the chapters dealing with the topics that were most difficult for me to understand during my journey: I refer to chapters 4 "Using GeoServer to Serve Complex Features" and understood 9 "GeoServer as a Spatial Analysis Platform".

The first allows you to understand and master the technique to manage and publish through geoserver complex features.
The second one, wonderfully explained, allows to configure geoserver amplifying its potential "spatially interactive".

So the final judgment is the following: HOORAY!!!!! Finally an operative manual useful to install, configure and put "in action" a powerful tool to manage geographic data.

Today, he is one of the country’s leading scholars of the presidency and has written or edited 26 books on American politics.

Martin P. Wattenberg teaches courses on American politics at the University of California, Irvine. His first regular paying job was with the Washington Redskins, from which he moved on to receive a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. He is the author of Is Voting for Young People?, which examines the role of young people in elections today. His research also encompasses how elections in the United States compare to those in other established democracies.

doesnt allow you to take personal notes, only highlighting. doesn't come with access code even with full ebook purchase. I recommend purchasing through pearson where its only $70 for full access to book and online course which many classes use. Pearsons version of the ebook is hands down the better choice

If it were possible for me to give zero stars I would. Do not, under any circumstances, buy this book in the Kindle edition. Or at least, do not buy it if you want to be able to read it on more than one device.

I tried to download it to my laptop, but that didn't work, so I put it on my phone so that I could finish an assignment. The text is so badly formatted for the phone as to be totally useless. When I got home, I tried to put it on my desktop. Kindle tells me that I have exceeded the number of devices I can have it on, and that in order to put it on my computer, I have to deregister my phone, and delete all the content on my phone. Nowhere does it say that there is a limit to the number of devices on the purchase page. And if it had, I would have made a different choice about what I would have purchased.

Do not buy the Kindle version, waste of money, I can not use it on my devices. I can't use it on the chromebook, I can't use on my laptop, keeps saying that it is not comparable with Windows 8, I have Windows 10 on the laptop but anyhow. So, the only device I can use it on is my cell phone. Thanks a lot amazon. Waste of $40, I regret not buying the paperback.

Jaime Hernandez-Garcia is Associate Professor of the School of Architecture and Design at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogota, Colombia. He received a PhD in Architecture, Planning and Landscape from the University of Newcastle, UK. His doctoral thesis, "El Parque de mi Barrio: Production and Consumption of Open Spaces in Popular Settlements in Bogota" won the Iberoamerican Award for research theses in Mexico in 2011. His research interests include informal settlements, low income housing, public space, people-place studies, community participation, local knowledge and local expression.

The major character, Sammy's problem is his age. He is nineteen, lives in a beach town, and works in a grocery store. He sees everything as monotonous. The story begins with him seeing some young ladies enter the store and being some what carefree. They are dressed in beach wear. He describes each of the girls and how even though they may not have the ideal body or facial image they could not care how they dressed. The girls are very distracting, so distracting that he rings a customer's item up twice. He then takes offense at the customer getting upset with him and describes the customer as a "register watcher and a witch". Sammy then describes one of the store workers as being less than perfect. "He's twenty-two, married, and has two kids." His boss, Lengel comes in and lets the girls know they should be properly dressed when they come into the store. The girls tell Lengel it will be quick. He then tells the girls this is no excuse and the next time they need to come back in the correct clothing. As the girls check out and Sammy hears the words exchanged with between the girls and his boss. He feels he doesn't need to put up with this. Trying to impress the girls, he quits his job. Then he realizes what a dumb idea it actually was.

Easy to read, I appreciated the author's down-to-earth writing style in his presentation of CNC fundamentals and problem-solving. The book provides a systematic, step-by-step approach that makes it easier to understand more advanced service-solving techniques.

Top Service? I don't think so.

Reading this book is like listening to a Name-Dropper at a party. The author heard a few words about CNC machines and is able to repeat them but it is clear he has no fundamental knowledge of CNC machine control systems.

There is no useful information in this book beyond "Call the OEM". Whoops, I just gave away the ending.

BoomerLit., Not So Light

Every baby boomer should have this book at his/her bedside as we creak and groan into the second half of our lives. Booth's literary selections are spot on (though the absence of multicultural voices is disappointing), and his commentary, as always, enriches the reading experience.Why waste time reading nursing home directories and spiritual guides when Booth has gathered all these great luminaries to light our way through the dark ages?

Literary Impressions of Aging

To delve into "The Art of Growing Older: Writers on Living and Aging," by Wayne Booth (U. of Chicago Press 1992) is to discover, or rediscover, that the world's literary greats have had a lot to say through the centuries on the topic of aging. This book, which I recently discovered, is a journey through the literary world by respected University of Chicago literature scholar Wayne Booth (1921-2005), author of "The Rhetoric of Fiction" and many other books.

From Sophocles to Euripides to Milton to Wordsworth, Byron, Browning, T.S. Eliot, and far beyond, writers have dealt, as we all do, with the challenges of aging and/or the contemplation of it. Toward the end of his introduction, Wayne Booth quotes Cicero, who wrote this in his early sixties: "For me, writing this book has been so delightful that it has not only erased all the petty annoyances of old age but has also made old age soft and pleasant." As he wrote this book, Wayne Booth added, "At seventy one, which doesn't feel at all to me like old age, I can say the same to you: Join me, friends, in this distinctively modern adventure, the almost certain journey into old age."

Beautifully tied together by Booth's incisive commentary, the poems and prose excerpts in this book are divided into an introduction, "Feeling Older," and three parts: "Facing the Facts: Losses, Fears, and Lamentations," "Cures, Consolations, Celebrations," and "A Further Harvest." I find it interesting that the "Cures, Consolations, Celebrations" section is by far the longest, indicating Booth's own positive view of aging. I hope that's a universal trend.

W. B. Years, in "Sailing to Byzantium," laments in the first stanza, "That is no country for old men. The young / In one another's arms, birds in the trees / . . . Caught in that sensual music all neglect / Monuments of unageing intellect." However, he finds solace in his hope to escape , in artistic, non-human form, to a golden bough from which to sing of "What is past, or passing, or to come."

Lighter and more humorous views of aging are included as well. In "Life Begins at 80," Frank C. Laubach wrote, "If you survive until you are 80, everybody is surprised that you are still alive. They treat you with respect just for having lived so long. Actually they seem surprised that you can walk and talk sensibly. So please, folks, try to make it to 80. If you ask me, life begins at 80."

I like that fact that Booth democratically includes some less-than-famous writers: Minnie Hodapp, at the age of 92, wrote in "I Haven't Lost My Marbles Yet!" "I sometimes feel a bit bereft / Of youthful eyes and ears-- / But when I think of all that's left / My trouble disappears. / So life goes on without upset / `Cause I ain't lost no marbles yet." Great poetry? No, but I like Hodapp's spirit.

With an index and pages of notes and sources, this is a scholarly book, but its appeal should extend beyond literature majors. As Booth says, "You can make a good start on a reading program that can well last for the rest of your life by consulting first the books I praise as I go along and then the booklists provided by the ten works I list following the endnotes. . . . Spend a year on those lists, and first thing you know you'll have become an expert and people will begin calling you a gerontologist." However, if you're just looking for inspiration and interesting quotes about growing older, this book is the ultimate source.

Too many snippits

I was excited to find this book as a possible text for a course I co-facilitate in a group of retirees. We had read some short stories by Simone de Beauvoir, and she is listed as one of the authors in this compendium. And I remember Wayne Booth's work from my graduate school days. I am very disappointed to find that the book does not include short stories as I had expected, but rather short (very short) passages from some of the major authors. For example, of the four pages devoted to Beckett, 2 are ABOUT Beckett and the other is a very very short work, but at least it appears to be entire. Simone de Beauvoir doesn't fare any better. There is a lot of poetry, which is OK, but doesn't really fit into what we have covered in this class over the past 2 1/2 years. This one is going straight to my library donation pile.

Could have been better

would have been better if there was humans instead of sea creatures and snakes. That really turned me off. once I put the book down, it's hard for me to pick it back up to finish it.

The book is well written has a nice flow to it and it's very comforting. I like how he plays on various aspects of human emotions
