Still an excellent book
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
As an undergraduate senior, I took a course in dimension theory that used this book Although first published in 1941, the teacher explained that even though the book was "old", that everyone who has learned dimension theory learned it from this book. There are of course many other books on dimension theory that are more up-to-date than this one. But the advantage of this book is that it gives an historical introduction to dimension theory and develops the intuition of the reader in the conceptual foundations of the subject. The concept of dimension that the authors develop in the book is an inductive one, and is based on the work of the mathematicians Menger and Urysohn. In this formulation the empty set has dimension -1, and the dimension of a space is the least integer for which every point in the space has arbitrarily small neighborhoods with boundaries having dimension less than this integer. The authors restrict the topological spaces to being separable metric spaces, and so the reader who needs dimension theory in more general spaces will have to consult more modern treatments.
In chapter 2, the authors concern themselves with spaces having dimension 0. They first define dimension 0 at a point, which means that every point has arbitrarily small neighborhoods with empty boundaries. A 0-dimensional space is thus 0-dimensional at every one of its points. Several examples are given (which the reader is to prove), such as the rational numbers and the Cantor set. It is shown, as expected intuitively, that a 0-dimensional space is totally disconnected. The authors also show that a space which is the countable sum of 0-dimensional closed subsets is 0-dimensional. The closed assumption is necessary here, as consideration of the rational and irrational subsets of the real line will bring out.
Chapter 3 considers spaces of dimension n, the notion of dimension n being defined inductively. Their definition of course allows the existence of spaces of infinite dimension, and the authors are quick to point out that dimension, although a topological invariant, is not an invariant under continuous transformations. The famous Peano dimension-raising function is given as an example. The authors prove an equivalent definition of dimension, by showing that a space has dimension less than or equal to n if every point in the space can be separated by a closed set of dimension less than or equal to n-1 from any closed set not containing the point. The `sum theorem' for dimension n is proven, which says that a space which is the countable union of closed sets of dimension less than or equal to n also has dimension less than or equal to n.
A successful theory of dimension would have to show that ordinary Euclidean n-space has dimension n, in terms of the inductive definition of dimension given. The authors show this in Chapter 4, with the proof boiling down to showing that the dimension of Euclidean n-space is greater than or equal to n. (The reverse inequality follows from chapter 3). The proof of this involves showing that the mappings of the n-sphere to itself which have different degree cannot be homotopic. The authors give an elementary proof of this fact. This chapter also introduces the study of infinite-dimensional spaces, and as expected, Hilbert spaces play a role here.
The Lebesgue covering theorem, which was also proved in chapter 4, is used in chapter 5 to formulate a covering definition of dimension. The author also proves in this chapter that every separable metric space of dimension less than or equal to n can be topologically imbedded in Euclidean space of dimension 2n + 1. The author quotes, but unfortunately does not prove, the counterexample due to Antonio Flores, showing that the number 2n + 1 is the best possible. These considerations motivate the concept of a universal n-dimensional space, into which every space of dimension less than or equal to n can be topologically imbedded. The author also proves a result of Alexandroff on the approximation of compact spaces by polytopes, and a consequent definition of dimension in terms of polytopes.
Chapter 6 has the flair of differential topology, wherein the author discusses mappings into spheres. This brings up of course the notion of a homotopy, and the author uses homotopy to discuss the nature of essential mappings into the n-sphere. The author motivates the idea of an essential mapping quite nicely, viewing them as mappings that cover a point so well that the point remains covered under small perturbations of the mapping. This chapter also introduces extensions of mappings and proves Tietze's extension theorem. This allows a characterization of dimension in terms of the extensions of mappings into spheres, namely that a space has dimension less than or equal to n if and only if for every closed set and mapping from this closed set into the n-sphere, there is an extension of this mapping to the whole space.
In chapter 7 the author relates dimension theory to measure theory, and proves that a space has dimension less than or equal to n if and only if it is homeomorphic to a subset of the (2n+1)-dimensional cube whose (n+1)-dimensional measure is zero. As a sign of the book's age, only a short paragraph is devoted to the concept of Hausdorff dimension. Hausdorff dimension is of enormous importance today due to the interest in fractal geometry.
Chapter 8 is the longest of the book, and is a study of dimension from the standpoint of algebraic topology. The treatment is relatively self-contained, which is why the chapter is so large, and the author treats both homology and cohomology. The author proves that a compact space has dimension less than or equal to n if and only if given any closed subset, the zero element of the n-th homology group of this subset is a boundary in the space. A similar (dual) result is proven using cohomology.

Complete survey of dimension theory up to 1940.
By Bernardo Vargas
This book includes the state of the art of (topological) dimension theory up to the year 1940 (more or less), but this doesn't mean that it's a totally dated book. Quite the opposite. If you read the most recent treatises on the subject you will find no signifficant difference on the exposition of the basic theory, and besides, this book contains a lot of interesting digressions and historical data not seen in more modern books. If you want to become an expert in this topic you must read Hurewicz.

The standard treatise on classical dimension theory
By Malcolm
Dimension theory is that area of topology concerned with giving a precise mathematical meaning to the concept of the dimension of a space. An active area of research in the early 20th century, but one that has fallen into disuse in topology, dimension theory has experienced a revitalization due to connections with fractals and dynamical systems, but none of those developments are in this 1948 book. Instead, this book is primarily used as a reference today for its proof of Brouwer's Theorem on the Invariance of Domain.

Various definitions of dimension have been formulated, which should at minimum ideally posses the properties of being topologically invariant, monotone (a subset of X has dimension not larger than that of X), and having n as the dimension of Euclidean n-space. Unfortunately, no single satisfactory definition of dimension has been found for arbitrary topological spaces (as is demonstrated in the Appendix to this book), so one generally restricts to some particular family of topological spaces - here only separable metrizable spaces are considered, although the definition of dimension is metric independent. For these spaces, the particular choice of definition, also known as "small inductive dimension" and labeled d1 in the Appendix, is shown to be equivalent to that of the large inductive dimension (d2), Lebesgue covering dimension (d3), and the infimum of Hausdorff dimension over all spaces homeomorphic to a given space (Hausdorff dimension not being intrinsically topological), as well as to numerous other characterizations that could also conceivably be used to define "dimension."

The first 6 chapters are primarily point-set topological, and can be followed easily by anyone who has taken a first course in topology, using, for example, Munkres or Armstrong. (Alexandroff and Hopf was the main reference used here.) In them the core results are developed, namely, that the dimension of Euclidean n-space is n (and hence R^n is not homeomorphic to R^m and n-manifolds are not homeomorhpic to m-manifolds for n not equal to m), that arbitrary n-dimensional spaces can be embedded in a (2n+1)-dimensional cube (indeed even in an n-dimensional subset of it), and that mappings into the n-sphere of a closed subset of an n-dimensional space can be extended to the entire space. These are further used to prove, for example, the Jordan Separation Theorem and the aforementioned Invariance of Domain, which states that any subset of Euclidean n-space that is homeomorphic to an open subset of Euclidean n-space is also open. (This is not trivial since the homemorphism is not assumed to be ambient. Another way to phrase this theorem is that boundaries in R^n are intrinsic.) Almost every citation of this book in the topological literature is for this theorem.

Along the way, some concepts from algebraic topology, such as homotopy and simplices, are introduced, but the exposition is self-contained. Some other elementary topological theorems, not involving dimension theory, such as the Brouwer Fixed-Point Theorem, Tietze's Extension Theorem, Borsuk's Theorem, the Baire Category Theorem, and Brouwer's Reduction Theorem (the latter 2 being proved in the index!) are also proved.

Chapter 7 is concerned with connections between dimension theory and measure (in particular, Hausdorff p-measure and dimension). Some prior knowledge of measure theory is assumed here. As these were very new ideas at the time, the chapter is very brief - only about 6 pages - and the concept of a non-integral dimension, so important to modern chaos theory, is only mentioned in passing.

The final (and largest) chapter is concerned with connections between homology theory and dimension, in particular, Hopf's Extension Theorem. In it, more than 40 pages are used to develop (Cech) homology and cohomology theory from scratch, because at the time this was a rapidly evolving area of mathematics, but now it seems archaic and unnecessarily cumbersome, especially for such paltry results. It would be advisable to just skim through most of this chapter and then just read the final 2 sections, or just skip it entirely since it is not that closely related to the rest of the results in this book. Certainly there are much better expositions of Cech homology theory.

The first 6 chapters would make a nice supplement to an undergraduate course in topology - sort of an application of it. Chapter 7 could be added as well if measure theory were also covered (such as in a course in analysis). The proofs are very easy to follow; virtually every step and its justification is spelled out, even elementary and obvious ones. Only in Chapter 7 is any work left to the reader, and there are no exercises. The book also seems to be free from the typos and mathematical errors that plague more modern books.

Haunt, by Laura Lee Bahr

Haunt is a tripping-balls Los Angeles noir, where a mysterious dame drags you through a time-warping bizarro hall of mirrors. She's the girl of your dreams - too bad she's dead. Or, is she?

In Haunt, "you" are the hapless corporate tool and rock star wannabe turned private dick. Here, even your most inconsequential choices can make all the difference between a Hollywood ending on the beach and sucking cock for clues.

This is genial lowbrow high-lit weirdness: the funny, punchy cousin of Danielewski's House of Leaves, a Vonnegut and Salinger pat on a choose-your-own cracker, with a lap dance from Nancy Drew. As much fun to make as it is to eat! Laura Lee Bahr is an award-winning indie actor/playwright/screenwriter with a gift for the hilariously, tragically absurd. Haunt is her first novel.

Totally unique
By Petra
First off, Haunt was totally different from anything I’ve ever read or listened to before. I am not really confident I can write an appropriate review for this. To start with, I am actually not sure I “got” it, if in fact there is anything to “get”. It totally messed with my head. At 15% through, I was considering giving up because I was so baffled, but the writing style and the narration were so good, I had to keep going. However, I had to stop doing the usual activities one does when listening to audiobooks to focus simply on listening. I am really glad I did because by the half way mark, I was totally hooked.
Haunt is the story of three people, two male and one female. It’s a story about a spirit (or a ghost?) and the mystery surrounding its death. It’s written partly in third person perspective and partly in the second person, so You are involved. And You are given some choices (kind of). It’s not chronological, so there are shifts in time and there are also shifts in perspectives. Sounds like chaos? Amazingly, the author, Laura Lee Bahr, really pulled it off, and the less I tried to figure it all out and the more I just went along with it, the more I enjoyed it. There were some laugh-out-loud moments, there was some sadness, there was some romance (kind of), there was mystery. It was mind bending.
Haunt is categorized as Bizzaro Fiction and won the 2011 Wonderland Book Award for Novel of the Year. It’s Laura Lee Bahr’s debut novel, and she narrates part of the audio book herself. She’s a great writer, and she was also a brilliant narrator.
The male narrators sounded very similar to me. They were excellent, no complaints at all, but I kept wondering whether voices that were a bit more distinguishable would have eased my confusion at times. There were no issues with the quality of the production. In fact, this was one of a few productions where I thought the sound effects and music were a useful addition rather than an annoyance. I’ve never listened to an audiobook twice before, but I intend to with this one after I’ve got hold of a copy of the Kindle edition first (this would have been great as a Whyspersync).
I don’t think Haunt is a book for everyone. There’s strong language and some sex scenes. But if you are willing to try something that is completely different, totally surreal, dark but also really humorous, then you are in for a unique ride with this one.

Well-Being (Key Concepts in Philosophy), by Ben Bradley

The concept of well-being plays a central role in moral and political theory. Policies and actions are justified or criticized on the grounds that they make people better or worse off. But is there really such a thing as well-being, and if so, what is it? Is it pleasure, desire-satisfaction, knowledge, virtue, achievement, some combination of these, or something else entirely? How can we measure well-being, amongst individuals and society? And how can we use it to make moral judgements about people, policies and institutions?

In this entertaining and accessible new book, Ben Bradley guides readers through the various philosophical theories of well-being, such as hedonism, perfectionism and pluralism, showing the benefits and drawbacks of each theory. He explores the role of well-being in moral and political theory, and the limitations of welfare-based approaches to ethics such as utilitarianism and welfare egalitarianism. Finally, he introduces puzzles about well-being that arise in moral and prudential deliberations about procreation and death.

Well-Being is an ideal introduction to these topics for those with no philosophical background, or for philosophers looking for an overview of current thinking about the subject.

Peale is a true Christian
By A Customer
This book gives the account of Dr. Peale's conversion experience to a vital relationship with Jesus Christ. His wife led him to the Lord, even though he was already a Methodist pastor. Many people claim that he was New Age and an evil perpetrator of false religion. The truth is that he was a master at applying Christianity to real life situations, when others were only interested in doctrinal correctness.
This is a great book and the title says it all: you have to be and remain tough-minded to shield yourself from all the negativity around you. Finally brethren, whatsoever things are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and of good report, if there be any virtue or praise, thing on these things. You are not going to help anybody if you have a sad, bad, negative attitude. The world needs radically consistent happy and positive optimistic people or we'll go down the tubes.
Have a happy day!

Addresses the Tough Minded Critics Headon
By Dr. W. G. Covington, Jr.
Dr. Peale talks about his internal struggle before he adopted the truths of "tough minded optimism." It was through observation that he discovered philosophy and generalizations didn't work in the real world of problems. The authentic faith as taught by Jesus Christ works! It doesn't ignore problems, it looks beyond them to solutions.
Odd that the same two philosophies that were around in the 1940s-1960s when Dr. Peale came to his conclusion are still in the arena today. Those of us who continue to benefit from Dr. Peale's excellent insight are grateful he made the right (and I mean that literally) choice. What he teaches works!

Interactive System Design, by Michael G. Lamming, William M. Newman

"The human-computer interface of the future will not be perceived as the interface to a computer, but as a pervasive part of the environment we all inhabit. Our challenge is ...to convey to today's students of software design the underlying concepts and competencies that will not be bound either to the current GUI or to the specific details of its successors. Newman and Lamming offer a significant new step in that direction." --From the Foreword by Terry Winograd, Stanford University From multimedia workstations to hand-held PDAs, from VR headsets to networked PCs --the modern computer is predominantly interactive. Today's designers and software engineers need to adopt a user-centred approach to system design. Newman and Lamming present a comprehensive guide to modern design techniques using proven methods and realistic applications. Highlights of the book include: * A coherent framework for user-oriented design, covering all stages of development from requirements analysis to implementation and evaluation. * A rich set of examples based on real-world data from studies of air traffic control, police detective work, medical practice, telephone operators--and more.* Two in-depth case studies illustrating methods of usability analysis and an exercise in innovative design. * The authors' support pages for this book , including Instructor's Guide (new 2/27/96) System designers and software professionals will welcome the book's focus on methods which have been tried and tested in real applications. Students of human-computer interaction and software engineering will benefit from the practical guidelines it offers for effective interface design.

From the Inside Flap

Interacting with computer technology has become an essential part of everyday life. Computer-based interactive systems provide support to an ever widening range of human activities, some as simple as checking one's bank balance, others as complex as flying a passenger aircraft. It is becoming increasingly important that these systems should be usable, reliable and cost-effective, and this means ensuring that they are well designed.

We have written this book for those involved in the design of interactive computer systems and for those who are learning to become designers. In it we present a range of methods essential to solving the problems encountered in designing systems that are interactive by nature. Principal topics covered include problem definition, user study methods, systems analysis and design, requirements definition, prototyping, and a range of methods for designing and evaluating user interfaces.

A major objective of ours has been to provide readers with a framework that can link together all aspects of designing computer-based systems for human use. In other words, we are offering a means of integrating methods specific to interactive systems (such as user interface design) with methods of a more general nature such as systems analysis and requirements definition--methods normally treated as a part of software engineering. We do this to make sure that the sets of methods are not treated each in isolation, but are collectively given the attention they deserve.

We are trying here to address a serious problem facing the computer industry and the institutions that train the industry's future designers. Basically, system design methods have changed much less rapidly in the last two decades than the systems themselves and the ways these systems are used. It is still common for software to be designed with little or no attention to the human activity it supports. There is an overall tendency to treat interactive system design as a 'special case' of software design. These practices are inappropriate in an era when interactive systems have become so widespread, and when virtually every software system built has an interactive user interface of some kind. It would be better, we think, if interactive systems were treated as the norm, and so we offer here a way of treating them as such.Challenges

There are many challenges in writing a book of this kind. We will highlight three in particular, concerning the designer's need for self-sufficiency, underlying concepts and access to real-world data.

We want our readers to gain familiarity with a full range of methods, so that they can tackle entire problems in interactive system design on their own if necessary. Unless they can achieve this degree of self-sufficiency they will rely on the help of experts to deal with interactive aspects of system design. This is risky, because experts are not always around to help when interactive systems are designed. Furthermore, when experts are brought into the team the designer is always better off knowing something of their area of expertise. This is why we include topics that some might consider specialized, such as Chapter 8's usability analysis methods and Chapter 10's statistical techniques for checking the validity of evaluations.

We are also concerned to make sure that the reader has an adequate foundation of underlying concepts to carry out design. The challenge here has been to extend the theoretical base of system design. The largely mathematical body of theory supporting computer science is simply inadequate to deal with interactive situations. The solution to this problem is usually to draw on psychological theories, but these are of limited use in collaborative situations where people interact with other people as well as with computer systems. We have therefore taken a multidisciplinary approach, offering a model of human performance based primarily on cognitive theory, but supplemented with concepts drawn from recent sociological and anthropological research.

Our third concern is to place system design in a context of real-world human activity. Success in design involves understanding the context into which the designed artefact will be introduced--the 'outer environment' of design identified by Herbert Simon (1981). By tradition, the context for which software is designed is simply another software system. An operating system, for example, is designed to be 'used' by application programs. When interactive systems are designed, however, the context of use is the human activity that the system will support, and this is much more difficult to understand. Indeed it is hard to find well-documented examples of real-life activity. We have nevertheless managed to collect together a number of examples, covering a broad spectrum from air traffic control to police work and collecting payment on unpaid bills. We use these examples to help the reader gain a broader and deeper understanding of the kinds of activities that interactive systems can support.

Our whole approach is thus centred around the need to design systems that support human activity. This is not greatly different from the 'user centred' approach advocated by other writers. The point we emphasize is the need to understand and support the tasks and processes that users perform; this is the way to ensure understanding and support of the users themselves.

Readership

The book's overall purpose is to assist readers in becoming effective system designers. It should be of value, therefore, to practitioners and students alike. As regards practitioners, our primary readership includes designers themselves, software engineers, system analysts, researchers and human factors engineers. We would expect parts of the book to appeal to a wider set of practitioners, however, including product managers, technical writers, marketeers, and indeed anyone closely associated with the development of interactive systems. The first seven chapters are oriented particularly towards this wider readership.

In the teaching context the book can serve a number of functions. Taken as a whole, it can serve as a text for courses on user interface design and human-computer interaction (HCI), for it covers all of the major topics generally included in such courses. The full set of topics, shown below in Figure 0.1, will typically be spread over an entire semester.

The first six or seven chapters can be used more widely, as shown in the darker shaded areas of the diagram. They can be used, for example, to introduce a course on software engineering, or (with Chapters 8 and 9) to teach a short course on interactive system design to non-majors. None of the material in the book is of a highly technical nature. The later chapters go into design methods in greater detail, however, and are likely to appeal more to students who are majoring in computer science or information science.Structure

The book is divided into four parts. It starts with a set of four chapters on foundational topics. These are followed by three chapters on system design and three more on evaluation. By this route the book covers the basic framework of design before turning to user interface design, which is covered in the final five chapters.

Each part of the book is organized around a set of methods and concepts. We think it best to recommend methods only if they have worked well in practice. Therefore we include methods that we personally have found useful in our design work. For the most part these methods have been developed elsewhere and have been thoroughly tried and tested by teachers and practitioners. Some of the concepts and representations are our own, however, because we could find nothing else capable of doing the job.

In Part I, for example, we begin with an introductory chapter and then focus on Problem definition, the topic of Chapter 2. We emphasize here the need to identify the design problem, and to distinguish this from the situation of concern that gives rise to designing the system. We introduce a number of key concepts, including usability factors and representations of human activities, and we suggest the use of a single-sentence problem statement to bring together the components of the design problem.

Also in Part I, Chapter 3 (the Human Virtual Machine) introduces a number of important theoretical concepts. Our primary purpose here is to offer a model of the workings of the 'machine' that performs human activities. Many aspects of human behaviour can be explained by the psychological theory of human information processing, but in order to cover behaviour in social settings this theory needs to be supplemented with findings drawn from anthropological and sociological research.

The remaining chapter in Part I, Chapter 4, provides an explanation of how the methods in the book link together and how the various design representations form the essential links.

Part II is concerned with system design, and in its initial Chapter 5 we therefore explain how to gather data about human activity in preparation for design. This leads into the important material of Chapter 6, systems analysis and design, which explains how observations of human activity are transformed into outline designs. It explains the nature of the analysis that takes place here, a topic that has rarely received much attention. This chapter is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand how analysis contributes to system design, and how interactive system design relates to software engineering. In the following Chapter 7 we cover requirements definition, and forge the link with software engineering more strongly. We explain the need to define, in a set of requirements, a usable functional form; we also explain why this can sometimes lead to writing voluminous sets of requirements.

Part III complements Part II; it explains how, in the course of design, interactive systems are evaluated in terms of their usability. Methods for checking usability are presented under two headings. Chapter 8 covers methods for evaluation 'on paper', before the design has been implemented. These methods are important because they can be applied early in the design and can sometimes save a great deal of unnecessary prototyping effort.

Chapter 9, prototyping and evaluation, plays a central role in Part III. It covers a number of methods for evaluating working prototypes, all of them following a general six-step evaluative process. This chapter introduces the concept of documenting the evaluation in terms of the performance requirements that the system is to meet, and it suggests a 'pro forma' notation for doing this. Chapters 8 and 9 may be considered for inclusion in a course organized around Parts I and II of the book. In Chapter 10 we explain how the results of prototype evaluation are checked for statistical significance, and offer a few simple methods.

In Part IV we cover user interface design. At the outset, Chapter 11 offers a number of different notations for describing user interfaces, and Chapter 12 explains the role of interaction styles and illustrates several different styles by means of a worked example. We place particular emphasis on conceptual design, by which an appropriate mental model is chosen for adoption by the user. We devote two chapters, 13 and 14, to this topic, presenting a range of design methods in Chapter 14. Chapter 15 covers the use of guidelines, explaining how to make use of sources of design knowledge and how to apply guidelines to answering questions of detailed design.

A number of case studies are included in the book. Some are used as linking material between the chapters; others illustrate methods, e.g., of evaluation and of choice of interaction style. Two detailed case studies are included at the ends of Parts III and IV respectively. The first describes a major exercise in analysing and evaluating the usability of a telephone operator's workstation, while the second covers a programme of research leading to the development of a portable memory aid.Acknowledgements

We have been fortunate to receive a great deal of support and assistance during the four-year gestation period of this book. Our colleagues at the Rank Xerox Research Centre, Cambridge, have been a constant source of insight and learning, and the management of the Research Centre have remained patient and supportive despite our repeated inability to complete the writing task within the time allotted. We are particularly indebted to Bob Anderson, Manager of RXRC Cambridge, without whose support the book could not have been written. We are also most grateful to Richard Harper, who helped us to fashion the book's coverage of sociological aspects of system design.

The book benefited greatly from the reviews conducted along the way, and we would like to thank those who reviewed the book in its various stages of development: Bob Anderson, John Bates, Dik Bentley, Marge Eldridge, Stu Card, George Coulouris, Jean Dollimore, Paul Dourish, Jonathan Grudin, Richard Harper, Bill Hefley, Brian Inwood, Allan MacLean, Gary Perlman, Richard Rubinstein, Abigail Sellen and Ian Sommerville. We would like to thank Mike Flynn and Maureen Stone for their help in providing illustrations. We are most grateful to Mike Atwood, Wayne Gray and Bonnie John for their assistance with Case Study A. We were also greatly helped by the feedback we received from the students we taught from early versions of the book, at Cambridge University, Queen Mary Westfield College, the Joint Research Centre, Ispra, and ACM SIGCHI '92.

Many people assisted us with the mammoth task of getting the manuscript into its final form. We are especially grateful to Christine King at the Rank Xerox Research Centre, and to the Centre's administrative staff. We would also like to thank Simon Plumtree for his constant advice, and all other staff of Addison-Wesley who helped shepherd the book through editing and production. Finally, we express our deep gratitude to our families, whose tolerance, forebearance and support has meant so much to us while this book was taking shape.

A crisp and informative view on design of interact. systems
By Giorgio Brajnik
I adopted this book as support textbook for my course on information retrieval systems. The book provides a crisp and very informative view on the problems and steps related to analysis and design of interactive systems. It covers most of the core topics relevant to the analysis of interactive systems (problem definition, task analysis, models, system analysis, system evaluation) and those related with user interface design (interaction styles, mental models, conceptual design). These topics are dealt with sufficient detail to get a reasonable understanding both of abstract and concrete aspects. The few complete examples guide the reader through most of the issues. Some topic (like experimental evaluation) is very detailed. Treatment is extremely clear and vivid. I definitely recommend this book to anybody interested in design of interactive systems.
