SECOND EDITION is the text for IACA certification - new edition do in 2014

As a new edition is in the early stages of production it is important to note that this review is of the Exploring Crime Analysis Second Edition. It is the study text for the International Association of Crime Analysis (IACA) certification exam to become a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst (CLEA). This edition text is in the early stages of a major rewrite. The new edition should be in publication by the end of 2014. If you are looking to take the test of this year there may be some changes in how the test is written and I am not sure that there are any plans to offer it at any other meetings this year (Sept. 2013). It is possible to take the test by computer. This can be done by making arrangements through your Human Relations division.

Exploring Crime Analysis is a collection of 20 readings, each authored by one or more selected editors. Editors were selected as area experts. Topics attempt cover every special skill a working crime analyst may need to employ. Every chapter has a corresponding section on the test. Chapters such as creating crime analysis documents and making presentations may feel lightweight even if the style can be academic. In the chapters on qualitative, quantitative, and inferential statistics, the reader will traverse from basic concepts to advanced and demanding methods of applied mathematics. This contributes to an uneven feel to the book. Parenthetically, crime analysts working in sheriff's offices and police departments may find an aggressive disinterest in internally created documents that include advanced statistics.

People come into the field of crime analysis with varied educational backgrounds. Those who have been in the field for more than a few years may have no college experience. It is now possible to get advanced degrees before your first day on the job. Most of this book reads like a graduate school text. There is a tendency among many of the contributors to begin their topics by explaining and giving examples and failing to be as clear when introducing more advanced topics where there is a greater need of longer explanations and specific examples. Some items are repeated (there are at least three or four definitions given for inductive and deductive reasoning) while other items are presented without any clarification. There are some specific instructions on the use of so-called "em" dashes, "en" dashes and hyphens; however only the keyboard location of the hyphen is given (it's the minus key).

The IACA purposes in producing Exploring Crime Analysis appear to be: firstly to ensure that all crime analysts have a single place to seek out instructions on what can be a sprawling demand for skills; secondly to ensure that CLEA is a document awarded on merit and a meaningful statement about the skill sets the holder can be expected to exhibit.

In summation Exploring Crime Analysis second edition is an excellent resource book for the practicing or student crime analyst. I hesitate to recommend it as your first crime analysis book and sincerely hope it is not your last. If you are not sure about becoming a crime analyst your openness to, if not enthusiasm about learning the skills in this book speaks definitively to your future as an analyst. If you are working as a crime analyst this book is a resource that can remind you of the breath of tools that should be in use in your department.

The most useful book of music theory/songwriting I've seen

I've paged through many books about songwriting trying to find a way to understand how to construct music to complement my lyrics. This book finally solved my problem and has absolutely revolutionized my songwriting. I wouldn't recommend this book for someone who is a complete novice in music theory because it moves very quickly through a great number of topics. I took notes to make sure I got everything I could out of it! I haven't looked at another music theory book since. If you're serious about writing better music, buy this book!

Finally theory applied to real songs...

If you're sick of theory books that only use author's etudes or "Grandfather's Clock" type traditional songs as context, then this book is for you. Dozens and dozens of real, commercial hit songs are used as specific examples to illustrate theory. Use this book with iTunes music store to hear the "big concept" theory (ie. Song Structure, Modulation, Groove, etc.) and use your own instrument to really dig into the specifics.

Do you want to know how Billy Joel came up with those chord changes? Do you want to apply creative harmony (chords) to a melody that you can't get out of your head? Do you want to make your songs more interesting melodically, harmonically or rhythmically? It's all in this little book (and much more).

Do you play and sing a lot of songs? Have you noticed similarities between them? Some similarities are obvious (1,4,5 chords for example). Some are less obvious and some are downright confounding. Often you have this tickle in the back of your brain that there is something more important going on.

There is.

Why does this chord work so well here? Why do Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Hendrix, Dire Straits and so many other group's songs stand out? They sound so unique as to be instantly identifiable. Is there some pattern here?

Yes.

I'm so glad Jai Joseph did not go down the path of these BS internet sites advertising "The Secrets of Songwriting" or "The Secrets of Theory." There's no hype here. It's simply a very organized approach to applying music theory to the craft of songwriting.

I'm a guitar teacher in baltimore. I use this book with my more advanced students. Some do not read anything but guitar tablature (and they don't want to learn standard notation). They still benefit enormously from this book. Some are not songwriters (and they don't want to be), but they do want to be able to learn more songs. They want to learn them faster and retain them over time. They want to be able to figure them out just by listening to the CD. This book has been a godsend for them.

A very practical and easy understood approach to songwriting

The author is clearly a seasoned songwriter with an abundance of knowledge and skill. Yet, he is able to explain the technicalities of songwriting in such a way that the not-so-professional hobbyist songwriter like myself can follow. Having not had formal music theory training myself I could easily catch up with the essentials without feeling it was a hopeless situation. The author managed to keep my attention and deal with the music theory in such a fashion that I could not wait to see his next topic. I found the approach very practical. In fact, I could immediately apply what I learned and the results were immediate. Still, an enormous amount of information is contained in this book and I am sure I shall refer back to the detail many times in the future. It has also helped me better understand songs that already became hits and the book is full of real examples.

This is an invaluable textbook for anyone interested in cutaneous surgery

I believe this textbook is an invaluable tool for any cutaneous surgeon who performs skin flaps.

As a young Mohs surgeon, this textbook has quickly become my go-to “guide” of choice when considering options for repair. The simple regional approach is very helpful when using the text as a “real-time” reference. Of the variety of defects I encounter, I seem to always find a similar one outlined in this text.

The multitude of excellent pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative photographs of a variety of defects sets this textbook apart.

Including many intra-operative photographs of the defects with the tissue clearly marked with a “magic marker” greatly aides in visualizing how the tissue will move to create the final repair.

There are a variety of defects included, from small to large, with repairs that range from relatively simple to very complex. While many of us may not encounter some of these larger defects on a daily-basis, they provide some of the best instructive examples to help better understand the complexity and nuances of tissue movement.

The included DVD is also an extremely helpful way to review common types of tissue movement.

The first several chapters of the textbook beautifully outline and explain tissue movement, different types of flaps, and many pros and cons of each in different situations. I have re-read these chapters several times already, and each time I find something new.

If you are looking for one textbook to provide an elegant and comprehensive overview of facial flaps, as well as excellent photographs that will help you in the real world, this textbook is indispensable.

(1909-1998) Lesslie Newbigin was born inNewcastle-on-Tyne, U.K., in 1909. He completed hisundergraduate studies in Cambridge and then served asStaffSecretary of the Student Christian Movement in Glasgow,Scotland. He studied theology at Westminster College atCambridge and was ordained by the Presbytery ofEdinburgh,Church of Scotland in 1936. That same year Newbiginmarried Helen Henderson and the two of them left for Indiawhere he was to be missionary of the Church of Scotland.

Great for Theology Students

A must read for anyone desiring to openly engage this present world with the eternal good news of God's Son.
A faithful and compelling explanation of why the church has a responsibility to be God's witnesses in and to the world.

Newbigin takes the doctrine of election and puts it smack in the middle of mission. God chose a man, not to narrow the scope of salvation but in order to broaden it. He chose Abraham so that all the nations of the world could be blessed. He chose us also and saved us simply so that He could bless others through us.

This book will challenge your thinking with regards to pluralism and God's justice in the world, and it seems as though at a time when those things are becoming somewhat overused and ambiguous, a fresh reminder with what God says is necessary.

Dialogical Evangelism in an Inclusive Community

The following is an analytical review.

Leslie Newbigin (1909-1998) was a theological missiologist/missionary and a missiological theologian. There are over six decades worth of his writings on mission theology and practice. Thus, he is considered to have had one of the greatest influences on the theology of mission in the twentieth century. Furthermore, Newbigin was a scholar practitioner since his works were always rooted in his living relationship with Jesus Christ; after all, he modeled what he wrote. He was also a Western missionary to India from 1936-1974, and upon returning to Great Britain, his missionary focus turned to the West (Shenk 1998).

The thesis of this book is that Christian mission is an open secret. It is open in the sense that the gospel is proclaimed to all without any boundaries, but it is a secret in that "it is manifest only to the eyes of faith" (Location 2556). As a result, mission cannot be relegated as a side task of the church, but it is the central calling and purpose of the church, yet the church does not own the mission, the mission is God's (Location 256). Newbigin's prophetic call to the church is for it to reemphasize its missionary character "to bring all things to their true end in the glory of the triune God" (Location 2556).

In the first section (Ch.1-3), Newbigin presents a historical background of missions and what the church's current situation is in the West. Although, this book was initially published in 1978, Newbigin's assessment of the state of the church is still profoundly accurate today in the twenty-first century. The missionary character of the church needs to be rediscovered, particularly in the West, in order for the church to live out its mission (Location 89). In the second part (Ch.4-6), Newbigin outlines the church's mission within a Trinitarian framework. Christian mission is all about proclaiming the Kingdom of the Father, sharing the life of the Son, and bearing the witness of the Spirit. This Trinitarian framework provides the proper foundation for the third part (Ch.7-10), where Newbigin examines contemporary issues in mission. In particular, he examines "some of the theoretical and practical problems that the church must meet in pursuing its missionary calling" (Location 902).

Newbigin's advice on dialoguing with non-Christians is such a powerful message that needs to be a regular part of every church's discipleship pathway. Not only does he reject an imperialistic mindset, but he also advises Christians to come to dialogue in humility and with an understanding that we will learn and be transformed as much as the non-Christian will because we are entering into the presence of the cross (Location 2472). Thus, the purpose of dialogue is not to "win" the other person to Christ, but it is to allow Christ to transform the hearer as much as the proclaimer, just like what happened to Peter when he "won" Cornelius to Christ (Location 2474). Behind this methodology is the understanding that Christians do not posses the truth, but rather that we, as Christians, bear witness to the truth (Location 2465). In order to dialogue with non-Christians, Newbigin advises Christians to "meet them and share with them in a common life, not as strangers but as those who live by the same life-giving Word, and in whom the same life-giving light shines" (Location 2381). When Christians do this, there will be mutual learning and teaching, in addition to both sides receiving and giving (Location 2381). When this kind of dialogue happens, the Christian must put his Christianity at risk as much as the non-Christian should put their religion at risk - otherwise true learning cannot take place. However, the Christian does this "within the ultimate commitment to Jesus Christ as finally determinative of his or her way of understanding and responding to all experience" (Location 2521). Consequently, I have never heard of such a radical way to dialogue with non-Christians, and the fact that Newbigin writes with significant field experience makes it all the more credible. As I interact and dialogue with others in my post-modern, post-Christian Canadian culture, I believe this is the way that evangelism needs to happen in order to see people enter into a relationship with Jesus Christ: Dialogical evangelism that takes place within an inclusive community.

Fake!!!!

This particular book I bought was a fake! It is photocopied and bound. While reading a chapter in the book one of my pages fell out. My professor let me know that there are fakes out there. So be careful because these fakes are hard to read or at least mine is. It is the same information, you can buy them directly and that's the only way to make sure it's real. Hope this helps you!

I ordered this book from Amazon and it is a bound photocopied version. I immediately called Amazon for a replacement and guess what they rushed to me the second time? Right,I got another bound photocopied version. Lots of photographs are completely unclear (no exaggeration!). The print is punishment for a busy, tired and a usually patient and tolerant person like myself. Do not buy this version from amazon for the price they have listed for it. This is absolute skullduggery and I am disappointed in Amazon.

Nessa's Fish is a nicely illustrated book about a young girl in the Artic who demonstrates great bravery when she goes on an fishing trip with her grandmother. It is slightly scary, with wild animals, but a nice ending. It is a great book for read aloud.

Full of Flaws

My first complaint is that there is no reason why this book should cost as much as it does. It has flimsy paperback binding (I owned it two months before the cover fell off, and my only use of it was during class and carrying it on the 2-minute walk from the music building to my dorm - in my hands!) and cheap paper. The only "pictures" are some black-and-white staves. My psychology book cost as much as this book and was physically made far superior. The only thing I like about the pages is that they accept pencil, which is nice for taking notes and jotting down answers to questions that can be erased later.

The set-up of the book itself makes sense and was fairly easy to skim when preparing for a test. I appreciated that. Yet I think all the good I can say about this book has now been stated.

As other reviewers have indicated, it has lots of errors. My theory teacher had to correct several factual errors in class, which made me worry about the rest of the book! Also, most of the "review" questions in the book don't have answers - which make them completely useless. I saw no point in practising skills if I didn't even know whether or not I was doing it correctly.

Also, I used the book to study so I could test out of Theory I, and was aggravated to no avail that the book does not really explain figured bass - the foundation of all theory! It mentions figured bass, assumes the reader knows what it is, and proceeds to teach new concepts. I had find websites to show me figured bass, thanks to the lack of explanation in my theory book!

Chances are, you don't have a choice whether or not you use this book, since, like I, you are coerced into using it because of your professor. In that case, be forewarned about the problems with it. However, if you do have a choice, only use this book if you can find it for $20 - that's about how much it's worth. And get supplements; you'll need them.

Conceptually solid, but many printing mistakes

The fifth edition of Elementary Harmony is a still a good text that stresses fluency in theoretical fundamentals. It moves more slowly than some competing texts, which I consider a plus. It is a text that teaches mastery of theory, not merely a survey of theory. It is much more readable (less pedantic) than old editions of Ottman. This edition is riddled with printing errors. The publisher is aware of this, and I know from personal experience that they are taking more care in the new fifth edition of Advanced Harmony. Elementary Harmony is in need of a new printing, but the publisher is seeking input to improve the accuracy of any reprint. To summarize, the concepts and sequence of the text presentation are very good, especially for students needing thorough grounding in fundamentals. The excessive errors will confuse students, but a reprint of the edition can easily correct the errors.
