In addition, she is a member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and the eLearning Guild. A Must Have!

Great Textbook! It came just in time for class and it is full of great information to help you understand why Electronic Healthcare Records are so important in today's growth in the healthcare field. The CD helps to give you additional help and information as well as the additional information that can be found on several key websites on the insight and use of EHR in the healthcare work place. I also paid less than it was in the school bookstore which was an added bonus. I recommend the book, the seller and Amazon to everyone and will continue to do so.

Many Nights at Many Operettas

This newly revised ( from 1984 ) book will be a treat to those who are not familiar with operettas but are interested to learn about them. Traubner is absolute accurate in his comments about each one (as I learned to my cost once in Munich. I saw "Tzar und Zimmerman" but had I paid attention to the book, I would not have.) His eye and ear for scores and librettos is spot on though, as he concedes, many of these have not been seen in perfomance in decades.

The book is arranged to take the reader on an entertaining tour of the genre and never forgets this is being written for the viewer and not the musicologist. But this later group will not feel slighted. Along with historical data, original casts, performances etc. are comments on the musical construction of each one and its' relationship to the time and audience in which it played.

The reader may find themself wishing some of the pieces might be revived, they sound interesting, tuneful and with careful performance might do well in repetoire. However, the majority of operettas are now period pieces, fascinating in Mr. Traubner's text but probably stultifying on stage.

Well written, amusing in it's recollections of nights in the theatre past, even if the topic is not your favorite, it's a good read as it traces the sociology of taste and how it varies.

As a reference source this is an invaluable book. As we get further from the time in which these pieces were written, material about them, indeed the pieces themselves (witness Gilbert and Sullivan's "Thespis") simply become non-existent. They will always exist in Traubner's OPERETTA; A THEATRICAL HISTORY. We should be grateful.

A brilliant book

Richard Traubner's "Operetta: A Theatrical History" is probably the best theatre history book I have encountered. It covers a huge topic in an orderly, clear manner by dividing the subject chronologically and geographically. As a result, a reader can follow it from start to finish and learn a great deal about changing fashions in entertainment and music. But the book is an extraordinarily useful reference work as well: it has a superb index and treats even lesser-known figures of the world of operetta fairly and thoroughly. Moreover, it is generously (and beautifully) illustrated.

Traubner's musical taste is first-rate, too, and his engaging writing style brings to life some of the long-forgotten gems of this once-wildly popular entertainment. There are thorough treatments of impresarios, singers, composers, and lyricists. Traubner also keeps an eye on the bigger picture by locating operetta's roots in 19th-century poltical satire and following its progress through the more romantic "silver" period of Lehar and Kalman to the modern Broadway musical. It also is the only English language text I know of that supplies a history of the Spanish zarzuela, so it is a necessary companion to the delightful recordings by Pilar Lorengar, Montserrat Caballe, and Placido Domingo of zarzuela hits. This is a landmark text, and any theatre, opera, or musical comedy fans should reward themselves by securing a copy.

(I encountered Traubner's text in its original--1984--edition and was unaware that he had produced a revised version in 2003. Needless to say, I will purchase that edition, too.)

About the Author
Ian Gawler is the best-selling author of Meditation Pure and Simple, Peace of Mind, and You Can Conquer Cancer. In 1975 Ian was given 2 to 3 weeks to live. Despite having his leg amputated, he was coughing up blood and pieces of bone as the cancer had manifested in his chest. He used imagery and meditation to cure himself. Ian has since become Australia's most well-known cancer survivor. He established The Gawler Foundation in 1983, a centre for wellness and healing and regularly gives lectures and workshops on meditation and wellness.

What distinguishes this study is the per spective of an Egyptologist who ap proaches the subject of ancient Egypt and Israel without the usual preconceptions and emphases found in the studies emanating from biblical studies scholars. Further, Redford highlights the dissimilarities and long-lasting distinctions between the disparate cultures which bordered the Sinaitic frontier, rather than stressing Egyptian origins of segments of Israelite cul ture frequently advanced by other Egyptologists. A well-written introduction to the ancient Levant

My son and his wife, both of whom are Ph.D. archaeologists focused on the Levant, recommended this book to me as essential to my researching a series of novels. My research library for this project has grown to over 60 essential books, and this book earned its way near the top. Redford's writing style is clear, precise, and enjoyable. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting an overview of the Levant in the bronze and iron ages. It has also been widely used as a textbook, which is a form of professional imprimatur.

Masterful Study

Naturally as an Egyptologist Redford relates the history of the Near East from the angle of Egyptian activity and thought, beginning from pre-dynastic times and following through to Assyrian empire, focusing mostly on Egyptian intercourse with Syria-Palestine, whether that be in the form of its control over its peoples, trade relations with them, or hostility towards them. (or in the case of the Hyskos, subordination) The origins of several Semitic groups, including the Israelite community, and those of different stock are explained, and there is a tangent of two chapters on the influence of Egypt on the Israelites in the political, ideological, cultic and literary spheres. All the events discussed acuminate with Nebuchadrezzar's destruction of Jerusalem, and an epilogue of two pages ends on a kind of cheesy note. But forgiving this, *Egypt, Canaan, and Israel in Ancient Times* is anything but a cheesy work. This is knitty-gritty historiography which far from 'attractively presents for the lay reader' anything. (see the review comment on the back cover by the *Journal of Palestinian Studies*) Nothing about Redford's book, excepting the pictures, maps, and tables perhaps, is 'lay'. That is, unless the laity in perspective are scholars who just aren't Egyptologists. Those unaccustomed to this kind of reading, with all its jargon and impressive eloquence, will find it overbearingly pedantic. Otherwise, you'll love it, as I did, and it will be easy enough to follow along. The footnotes are usually short and to the point, citing references with little or no comment, so no real worries about a choppy read, eyes moving constantly athwart between main text and footnote. (I hate that for myself) I would like to have seen provided a chronological chart for the periods discussed. I have other ready resources for this, but of course not everyone would. I wouldn't mind a bibliographical list either.

I only gripe with the fact that Redford gets a little caustic when he addresses biblical studies, and gives off the impression that all or most biblical scholars are 'apologists' for the historicity of the biblical tradition. This is misleading and in some cases I would say unfair. His passion for his own field erupts through the pages at this point, as is evident, e.g., from the first-person pronouns (268 & 421, when the norm of self-reference everywhere else is 'the present author') and remarks such as: 'At least we can thank such writers for providing us with comic relief.' [n.113, p.310] I don't think he should have crossed so antipathic to a field he's not an expert in...then he would not have made a mistake such as: 'The absence of the Exodus tradition from early Biblical material should also be noted.' [n.76, p.410]; but then not long later: 'Despite the lateness and unreliability of the story in Exodus, no one can deny that the tradition of Israel's coming out of Egypt was one of long standing. It is found in early poetry (e.g., Exod. 15) and is constantly alluded to by the prophets.' [412] My guess for such a contradiction is that he wrote the footnote some distance prior to discovering and writing the fact of the latter (despite their spatial closeness in the text) and never emended his error. However, on most counts I agree with the points he's making about biblical literature.

* Redford states: 'The patient and observant reader will have noted that, up to this point in our study, no mention has been made of Israel' (257). This is false (172 & 237)

* Redford cites his wife, Susan Redford, once in n.63, p.271.

Great text on a rich subject

This book is very informative, and obviously extremely well researched. It is formatted with footnotes like a textbook, and that's what it felt like. Note the author comes from a secular perspective, which may be a little off-putting to Jews and Christians, but the content is certainly unimpeachable.

Only the Best

Just as many other tropical fish hobbyists, I have quite a few books-primarily reference books-that I use to identify and learn some essential information about the biology, habitats, and behavior of the fish that I choose to keep.

The Axelrod Encyclopedias are excellent, The Amano books on planted freshwater aquariums are also very good. When it comes to the one reference that I refer to most frequently-it is the Baensch series. They are throrough, contain much more info than any equivalent book, often in the articles that open each volume, and have the best combination of photos, habitat info, and scientific taxonomy on the individual fish specimens than are to be found in any other reference for the general public.

Each new volume expands their usefulness, and although pricey-especially in hardback-they are worth every penny. They are a quality product and not only are indispensible in a practical sense of fish keeping, but add a range of information and credible knowledge that increases anyone's appreciation of this fascinating hobby.

If you are a tropical fish hobbyist, beginner or expert, buy these books!

The best freshwater aquarium reference books I've found

Although the preface of Vol. 4 says the species included may not, for the most part, be encountered by the average aquarist, I found several loaches included that we are currently keeping. What I love about the Baensch Atlases is the combination of beautiful pictures and comprehensive text descriptions. Anyone who is truly interested in keeping tropical fish, and learning about them, should have these atlases. Vol. 4 includes a large section on kilifish.

Nice books but not worth the money

Nice books, I have the set, however for the money you can have a lot of nice fish and you get more information on the net than these books describe. Nice pictures and a ok reference book. If you got to get one buy the 5th, which recaps the first 4 books. Hope this helps

One of the best books ever!

This book has got to be one of the best photographic costume history books ever! Snatch this one while you can!
The section on Charles James is alone worth it, since it is next to impossible to find great photos of his work.
I wish more Costume history books were like this with actual full color photos. And the photos are big, not tiny stamp-sized images that make your head hurt.
If you're like me, you hate to invest money to get a book filled with crappy line drawings.
This is what I want in a fashion book. The actual photos are in full color, with front and back shots.

FABulous--Get it before it's out of print

If you never had a chance to visit the Brooklyn Museum during one of their fashion exhibits (I made the epic journey there twice, only to find the FASHION exhibits closed for one reason or another) or you missed out on their book, "Worth, Pingat and Doucet", this book's for you.

The author doesn't just recite the garment details, she talks about the designers shown here, long forgotten as well as the better known. Valentina is here, for instance. Examples from Charles James that I had not seen before. Many others! Not a few of these garments came from well known socialites. Lavish full length studies in glorious color. For me, it was worth both the expense and the wait to get this. Wonderful examples shown, something for everyone! Details you can SEE. By the way, some of the garments seen here have had pattern graphs taken from them in Blanche Payne's "History of Costume", the older edition.

Sadly, the Brooklyn Museum simply doesn't have the resources to keep these clothes or mount any exhibits. This explains why there was nothing to see when I went in the past. Rather like Snowshill Manor's excellent collection (some of which were graphed by J. Arnold); the clothing has now moved elsewhere and seen seldom. Barnard Castle in Britain was another museum that auctioned their costume collection off completely.

Having said that, the Brooklyn Museum is a fine one with many other treasures to see, should you make the journey. Buy the book now, before it's out of print and you have to mortgage your house to buy a copy.

Vintage couture at it's very best

If you are seeking a vintage couture resource that is complete, informative, with great photos, this would be the one for you. It is similar in feeling to the Kyoto Costume Institute book with fantastic photos and descriptions of the best of the best. I managed to see both the Brooklyn Musuem Exhibit AND the Metropolitan Museum exhibit in one weekend. These were some of the most amazing garments that one will be able to see. Most will agree that the Brooklyn Museum exhibit was laid out better and easier to see than the Met's, but they did make a nice sister exhibit. Most of the garments here are from the Brooklyn Museum with a few add ins from the collection and a few deletions from the original exhibit. But for the most part, it is pretty complete. This is a great tool for the vintage couture collector and quite an education on most of the leading designers and a few that have long become forgotten, especially the American Designers. That is the most interesting part. The Women American designers were quite informative including Eta Hentz, Bonnie Cashin, and of course, Clare McCardell. The Worth and the Charles James collections are some of the finest and perfect examples of their couture that is in existence today. That alone makes it worth purchasing this resource.
The Book is not too big and not too small. The price is right and the glossy photos and finish of the book is amazing. I recommend this book highly!

Reflection: AAS 4013

From the beginning to the end the story of Waiyaki had my attention. His story made me reflect on the relationship that I share with my father. Even though Chege had passed, the goals that he had set for Waiyaki were still valued by Waiyaki throughout the remainder of his life. I would do the same if my father was to pass away and I can relate to it because I am away from home now and cherish the values and beliefs that he has taught me. On another note, I feel as though Wa Thiongo wrote this book in order to put perspective on the colonization of Kenya. We see and understand that Europeans just want the best for other cultures by introducing them to new technologies, better education systems, and different religions, etc... But this book has shown us, that everyone has diff values. The people of Kenya valued their land and traditions and also made the best of their technologies and education. They seemed to be content and overall happy with life. From the inside looking out the Europeans had no right or good reason to colonize and break up the lives of these people.
Overall, I feel as though the book is a good read. It opened my eyes not only to value my family relations but also value other cultures beliefs and ways of living.

About the author Vadim Manassewitsch graduated from Columbia University in 1959. Since 1981, he has worked independently as a consultant teaching frequency synthesis and designing state-of-the-art synthesizers—his specialty for 27 years. Previously, he served as an electrical engineer with Manson Laboratories, Inc., as a project engineer with Westrex Company—a division of Litton Industries—and as a member of the technical staff of RCA’s Surface Communications Systems Laboratory. He worked as a project engineer for Polarad Electronic Instruments, as a senior member of the technical staff of ITT’s Defense Communications Division, as an engineering consultant for GI’s Electronic Systems Division, and as a senior member of the technical staff of Rockland Systems, Inc.

Mannessivitch's landmark text is a milestone in the synthesizer design community. For the first time, a clear and concise explanation of synthesizer theory and design is put to paper and is presented in a manner which transcends time and technology. His treatment of the impact of synthesizer performance on system degradation is well-thought and complete. Finally, the presentation of various technologies (both analog and digital) can be used for years to come. A must-have

This book is a classic. I constantly used a colleague's copy for the longest time. Finally I decided to get my own. It is a must have for anybody working on frequency synthesizers. But this is not what makes it great, it is the additional information that the author adds. Shielding effectiveness, control isolation. Topics which are essential to low noise synthesizer designs, but are normally not included in text books. Many of these are things that one only picks up through experience, empirically, and they are presented here well organized and easy to follow. Another author that I also like, because of similar style and constant addition of this type of hard-to-find data is Randy Rhea.
