A graduate of Cornell University, Brown University Medical School and George Washington University Hospital residency program, Laurence B. Brown is an ophthalmic surgeon, a retired Air Force officer, the medical director and chief ophthalmologist of a major eye center in the Middle East. The author of four books of comparative religion, he is also an ordained interfaith minister with a passion for writing reality-based fiction. For the past two decades, he has divided his time between America, England, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. The author does a good job of weaving little known yet very important historical facts into an entertaining story line. This should be required reading for every seminary student and ordained minister, Christian, Catholic or Jewish!

Best book I've read in a while...

I recommend this book for honest truth seekers and those who appreciate really good story telling! Dr Brown once again combines truths and fiction to really get the reader thinking, while taking them on a roller coaster ride. The use of characters and their interactions are original and their are some truly shocking facts that most today are unaware of.

If you are not one for being spoon fed, then read this book and follow up on the links given at the end.You won't regret it. ;-)

About the Author

Lynn Meltzer, PhD, is Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Institute for Learning and Development (ILD) and ResearchILD in Lexington, Massachusetts. She holds appointments as an Associate in Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education and as an Adjunct Associate Professor at the Tufts University Department of Child Development. Dr. Meltzer's clinical practice, research, publications, and presentations have focused on understanding the complexity of learning and attention problems using a multidimensional model to bridge the gap between theory, research, and practice. A fellow and past president of the International Academy for Research in Learning Disabilities, she is the founder and chair of the national Learning Differences Conference.

The importance of executive functioning and its relationship to education can no longer be ignored!

The author(s) are able to take the research in the field and present it in a fashion that can be immediately applied in the classroom. Meltzer bases this book on scientific studies which goes one step closer to the neuroeducation model which is bringing findings in the laboratory and classroom together. It is stated in the book that some of the information has been validated in controlled studies, some on research in classroom and have been used effectively in the educational therapy setting. Much of the information came from the Institute for Learning and Development (ILD) and ResearchILD which appears to combine the research/training model discussed by other authors.

Besides the excellent overview on understanding, assessing and teaching executive function processes, the constructs of goal setting, planning, prioritizing, organization, remembering, problem-solving and self-monitoring/self-checking form the chapters that comprise this book. There are suggestions on methods to teach EF separately or incorporating it in classes of math, reading, or writing. The reproducibles can be used in the classroom or with individual students. I found it easy to relate to this book because of the large number of references to experimental designs which lend credence to the efficacy of the recommended techniques.

While part of the title includes "What works for special-needs learners", all schools and educators need to become familiar with the concepts discussed on these pages.

Excellent book on EFD
By books are my life
Once again, I am pleased to purchase a book that is well-written, informative, and practical in knowledge and use. Executive Function Disorder (EFD) is the latest "hot topic" in special education. Anyone with adhd, autism, and processing issues, or if you still can't organize your utensil drawer, you've got EFD. Suffice it to say, my utensil drawer looks like a dungeon for utensils gone bad. As the parent of a daughter on the autsim spectrum, a 17 year old son (need I say more), and a special educator, I found this book particulary helpful in both understanding EFD better, and putting into action many of the excellent ideas. There are charts, explanations and anecdotal material to help you visualize and implement organizational strategies and work on emotional regulation (wouldn't that we all could get a handle on that). I highly recommend this book for teachers, parents and anyone who needs to understand why a sock in front of the hamper instead of in the hamper makes one explode like an overstuffed sausage.

This book is really good to have as a tool in your classroom. It gives some great suggestions on how to strenghten students executive functioning skills. Even students who have not been identified for special education might have some executive functioning problems which will affect their learning in many ways. This book will help guide you through making simple adaptations and modifications to give every student an opportunity to do their best.

About the Author
Frances Hodgson Burnett was a born storyteller. Even as a young child, her greatest pleasure was in making up stories and acting them out, using her dolls as characters. She wrote over forty books, including the classic A Little Princess, also illustrated by Tasha Tudor.

A First-Rate Edwardian Romance.

This is a brief but pleasant romance, occasionally sold under the title of "Emily Fox-Seton".
Emily is thirty-four years old, of excellent family background with a good "woman's education". Unfortunately, Emily is penniless and has to make her own living. Fortunately, Emily is practical, intelligent and extremely good natured. She has been dealt a poor hand but cheerfully makes the best of it.
Emily survives by Being Useful to noble and upper middle class ladies for a modest remuneration. Emily locates and recruits reliable servants, performs secretarial duties and runs errands for these patrons.
As the story opens, Lady Maria Bayne has invited Emily to her country estate to help with her annual "early August party". This year, the houseparty's draw will be the wealthy, widowed Marquis of Wanderhurst who is looking for a wife.
The reader is introduced to the potential contenders to the title of Marchioness. The American heiress, Cora Brooke, who has everything money can buy, excepting a Noble title. The beautiful debutante success of the last Social Season, Lady Agatha Slade, who must marry to save her family from absolute penury. And the widowed writer, clever Mrs Ralph, ready for another success. The hunt is on and it is all very entertaining.
One of interesting sidelights into this rarefied society is how much more freedom and self-determination is available to self-employed Emily when compared with the constricted and confined lives of the heiress and the debutante.

Hooray for Persephone!

Though famous for her children't books nowadays, this is one of Burnett's books for grown-ups. It is a sort of cheesy romance, but oh is it fun! Republished by Persephone Books, an independant published in London, this book is well worth purchasing: you'll read it again and again whenever you're looking for a fun, light, and well-written book on a rainy day.
Written a hundred years ago, there is a sort of paternalistic-bordering-on-rascist attitude towards the Indian characters, but I don't think it's anything too egregious.
When you've read this book, read "Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day," by Winifred Watson and also published by Persephone.

We can see the happy ending coming...

But it doesn't matter a bit. The sweet character of the heroine and the charm of the narrative keep the reader totally engaged.

Miss Emily Fox-Seton is thirty-five, steeped in genteel poverty, and quite cheerfully making do. She runs errands and does various secretarial services for rich patrons. She dresses with style on very little, appreciates every good thing that comes her way - and is perfectly unaware of her remarkable qualities.

One of her patrons, old Lady Maria, invites Miss Fox-Seton to her country estate to help organize her summer entertaining. Miss Fox-Seton is thrilled to be getting a week in the county.

Lady Maria's nephew, the widowed Marquis of Walderhurst, will be there. So will several gorgeous young women who would be happy to marry him. And the tale enfolds.

This book was published in 1901, during the same era that New Woman literature was on the scene. But Miss Emily Fox-Seton is not a New Woman, even though she has the organizational powers of a high level PR executive.

The Making of a Marchioness is a frothy, romantic, nostalgic societal fairy tale told with wit and grace. At the same time, there's something oddly deep about the portrait of Miss Fox-Seton, who sees everyone as kind and almost everything as delightful.

An Incredible Story

Billed as a psychological thriller this novel caught my eye. It's also billed as horror, my least favorite genre. But it depends on how you define horror. Horror just for the sake of horror I shy from. But once I began reading this book, I didn't want to put it down, partly because the writing itself is so good...and because as I kept reading I became more and more involved with the characters, largely because the author is superbly skilled with dialogue, characterization, action, plot, pacing, description....this amazingly imaginative author does it all.

Every individual on the planet is on a journey. So are the characters in The Catacombs, in their case a horrifying one. But within the darkest of places we can see ourselves in ways that we couldn't if we were always in the light. This inner exploration must, of necessity, involve opposition: good vs. evil, darkness vs. light. The darkness in this novel is as deep as the inner recesses of natural man's soul, the setting--the catacombs--being a character in itself to help the reader feel not just absolute physical darkness but also the darkness that lurks in the hearts of men.

It is at 65% (kindle edition) where one of the towering characters, Zolan, voices this theme: "

"We are all savages at heart, Daniele. We are inherently a violent species. We commit wars, genocide, murder. That is why every society is built upon the foundation of law and punishment. We cannot trust ourselves. We need to be kept in line."

There are very few such explicit didactic truths in the book. Rather, most truths/nuggets of wisdom surface through the actions and interactions of the characters who survive two days in a subterranean house of horrors--a vast burial ground--beneath the city of Paris. Two days of confrontations with men and women who have been both emotionally and physically disfigured; characters who exemplify man's inhumanity to man.

But there is good even in the darkest of hearts, as in Zolan's, a flawed man who loves his daughter. But sometimes the darkness is too deep, too complex, and some can't escape it. Others want to, and struggle toward the light, as does the protagonist, the mostly-first-person-narrator Will, and the thirteen-year-old physically disfigured Katja. I will see Katja in mind's eye for a very long time. For me, she is the most compelling character in the story. Which brings me to the skill with which the author handles multiple viewpoints, allowing the reader to see inside some of the characters' minds.

I can't say enough in praise of this superbly written novel that had me thinking: How many people, metaphorically speaking, live underground, disfigured emotionally or physically or both? Come to the catacombs and follow their journey through a place that's a mirror image of the "real" violent world in which we live, a violent world above ground that the main characters long for in their darkest hours.

A scary journey to the horror underworld

In the Prologue, the reader is exposed to a picture of acute fear: someone running to escape horror and death. The novel then reverts to almost two days earlier. The story begins to unfold, drawing the reader willingly toward the Catacombs. From the Prologue, the reader wonders what monstrosities inhabit the underearth. Parts of the novel are edge of your seat action and suspense, but the story is more than that. There are insights into human nature. We see it in the contrasting personalities of the explorers and in the contrast between evil that becomes pervasive and accepted as normal in the Catacombs and the un-evil and at times good within the explorers. The characters are colorful, engaging, and believable with contrasting personalities that adds interest. The writing is polished -- descriptive narrative that pulls the reader along. GRIPPING, & SUSPENSEFUL

I was so drawn into this story, that many times I had episodes of claustrophobia, and would have to put the book down and walk away and tell myself it is just a book...that I really wasn't stuck miles beneath the city, and in those small catacombs where a person could easily get stuck and or lost, and never to be heard of again. Kept me on the edge right up to the end. This was the first book I had read by Jeremy Bates, but it won't be the last! I highly recommend this book and Author to anyone looking for a suspenseful, gripping, take you to the edge kind of story. Here it is!
