The Best

This under-appreciated book is far and away the best book on screenwriting I've ever come across, and I've read them all. Whether the author is a successful industry screenwriter doesn't really matter, much more accomplished screenwriters have written books that don't measure up to this one. This book is simple, concise, and and comes from a place of humility. A screenwriting book isn't going to make anyone a great screenwriter, but this book can be a very useful tool for just about anyone trying to improve their craft.

The book is primarily a celebration of those rugged places that still permit us to see that power. The occasional digressionsan anecdote about John Berryman or a hymn remembered from boyhoodserve to refresh rather than obstruct, and are neatly tied in with the main narrative. This series of interconnected essays reflects one man's exploration of natural places, from the plains of his native Minnesota to the mountains of Wyoming. Gruchow mixes his observations of the natural world with philosophical meanderings, often condemning our present age for its excesses and creeping homogeneity. Among the chapters are descriptions of a modern tour along the old Oregon Trail, walking expeditions into the Bighorn Mountains, and the migration of sandhill cranes. Why People Should Be Outdoors

This book is an enjoyable mix of travelogue and environmental philosophy, but the travelogue portion is more limited than it seems at first glance. A few chapters describe Gruchow's visits to interestingly empty places in Minnesota and Nebraska, but most of the rest of the book deals with two backpacking trips in the mountains of Wyoming. In each chapter Gruchow's writing evolves quickly from a scenery-based travelogue to soul searching and very in-depth musings on mankind's place in nature. The book essentially becomes a series of essays on why people have become disconnected from nature in the modern world, and should spend far more time in the empty spaces that Gruchow enjoys visiting. His thoughts on these matters are deeply philosophical with a real talent for big-picture analysis on the state of human society. Some great examples are Gruchow's use of the population distribution of robins to describe how corporate America is homogenizing our natural diversity (chapter 9), and a staring contest with a trout in a mountain lake that kicks off a wave of social and personal philosophy (chapter 18). Gruchow's writing has the tendency to get drifty and to go off on very long and mundane tangents - beware of sections that are written in the second person especially. But this style of writing (and thinking) is what happens when you're alone in nature with nothing but your thoughts. Gruchow proves that more people should experience this state of mind.

A book to be discovered

This book is a series of word paintings of wilderness, no story here. I found it an antidote to a busy life. If you can't get outdoors, live in the city perhaps, it's a way to escape without going anywhere, like good books are. Some of the images he paints have me planning a vacation to places I wouldn't have otherwise wanted to visit, like Nebraska (no offense meant to Nebraskans, I'm sure it's a great state). Halfway through the book I got curious about the writer and looked him up. It was devastating to learn he could see such beauty in the world but not enough to keep living. I had to put the book away for a while, but I still read it when I need a dose of nature.

I thoroughly enjoyed The Necessity of Empty Places. It's vivid desciptions of the praririelands of the US and it's thought provoking insights into the relationship that humans have with their environment make the book a satisfying page-turner. Bits of humor and humility keep the book fun and refreshing

A great read, I'll be waiting for the next one!

It took me a little while to really get into this book, but once I did it was a great read! I love a good thick book and this one delivered a great story that was different from any other book I've read. I like this post-apocalyptic tale and I am looking forward to reading the next book to see what is in store for the star-crossed main characters and their friends. This book also has the prettiest cover I have ever seen, the colors are amazing.

Great book

Love pretty much all of this Author's books, this books pace was fast enough to maintain interest easily. I didn't put it down for 2 days reading and rereading to catch details I missed. The characters are well written and easy to relate to on many levels, love the strong women in this book! I absolutely cannot wait to see what's next! I think the development of the different tribes and clans and their interactions with each other... their prejudices and assumptions about each other are sadly similar to the realities we all live in daily. The storyline kept me guessing throughout and shocked and surprised me often. Found myself imagining this world P.C. Cast has created and marveling at the beauty described, the drawings were a neat touch as well, helping to fully paint the picture the words created.

Another obsession series from PC Cast

Although the story started a bit slow and there were lots of moving parts that needed to be explained as the story develops this was a great base for another series of books that I will devour as soon as they are available. Clan of the cave bear meets post apocalyptic world - a new beginning through an end.

Jazz for the classical pianist

This suite with excellent orchestration and catchy melodies is an excellent addition to the repertoire of your combo, IF you have a skilled flute player.

The book contains 5 separately bound volumes with an unattached paper cover (pictured): parts for drumset, guitar, bass, flute, and piano. The drumset, guitar, and bass parts are straightforward, western style musical notation, with cues. Flute is the same, but Part 6 (Tendre) is scored for Alto Flute in G. The piano part is completely written out just as heard on the recording, except there is minor simplifying in the more complex passages of Gaylancholic and while the gist of the solos are provided, Bolling urges the player to embellish with "Improv" commands. The piano part includes, for the most part, the flute and guitar parts written above the main staff, and occasional bass cues.

Picnic Suite is moderately advanced music, but nothing too complex for an advanced high school or college-level combo can't handle. The peripheral movements: Rococo, Madrigal, Canon, Tendre, and Badine (1, 2, 5, 6, 7) are simple in that a classical pianist could pick it up and read it straight from the score, not winning any style points of course, but are easily accessible. Part 3 and 4, Gaylancholic and Fantasque are nasty movements that provide amazing music, but also major difficulties. The main difficulties in Gaylancholic are for the flute and the piano, who have to navigate tricky runs in harmonic E minor and long solos of increasing detail. Fantasque is very difficult for the piano given its heavy jazz rhythms and 5/4 meter. I'm not a guitarist, but Tendre and Badine look like nightmares for the guitarist of those movements.

Highly recommended product. The only reservation I have against the music is that it's not a particularly common combo; at least for me it's hard to find musicians (esp. flautists) of this caliber that are able to play jazz and in these many varying styles of it. Definitely check out the CD first to see what kind of music this is.

About the Author
Ingrid Klimke is a former international trainer of dressage, show jumping, and event horses, and currently competes for Germany as an event rider. She had always been able to call on her father’s experiences but has also been greatly influenced by Fritz Ligges, Ian Miller, and Anne Kursinski. She appeared at four Olympics, from 2000 to 2012. With her horse Abraxxas, she has won two gold medals in team eventing, at the 2008 Summer Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics.

In January 2012, she was promoted to a “Reitmeister” (Riding Master, a special title of the German Equestrian Federation). Klimke is the second woman ever to be promoted as “Reitmeister”.

Reiner Klimke 1936–1999. Dr. Klimke, one of the most famous and successful dressage riders of all time won Olympic Dressage team gold medals in 1964, 1968, 1976, 1984, 1988, and the individual gold in 1984 on his most famous horse, Ahlerich. Early in his riding career he competed in eventing and was a member of the winning West German three-day event team at the 1959 European Championships, and competed for West Germany in the 1960 summer Olympics.

Klimke not only rode and trained, but also ran a law firm and served on several boards, including the FEI Dressage Committee. With his wife, Ruth (also a top show jumping and dressage rider), he had 3 children: Ingrid, Rolf, and Michael. His daughter Ingrid Klimke competes successfully at the international level in eventing and dressage and won an eventing gold at the 2008 summer Olympics twenty years after her father's last Olympic gold medal. His son Michael also competes at the Grand Prix level in dressage. Klimke died at age 63 in Munster, Germany.

An excellent reference work on ayurvedic herbal revitalization therapy

The word 'Rasayana' lterally means “the path that rasa takes” (rasa - referring to the primordial tissue - plasma), and ayana - (path). It is considered as the science of the restoration of youth and relief of the suffering and degradation that accompanies aging and bestows longevity. It is believed in ayurveda that the qualities of rasa dhatu influence the health of all the other dhatus of the body; hence, any medicine that enhances the quality of rasa is a a Rasayana. Rasayana tantra, the study and teaching of rejuvenation medicine, has long been a traditionally independent clinical discipline within ayurveda.

Rasayana (rejuvenation or revitalization therapy) one of the historic eight specializations within traditional ayurvedic practice, although this least understood branch of this science, is becoming of ever growing interest.

Until relatively recently, much of the information on India's research into their medicinal plants has remained within India, mainly published within Indian journals. Over the past few decades, however, as interest in the field of ayurveda has expanded globally, and with the integration of herbal. herbomineral and metallic medicines discovered and long used abroad into convention treatments, and along with the strengthening of academic networks internationally, the results of Indian herbal drug research is both becoming available to Western audiences as well as stirring Western inquiries into the properties of these medicines.

Looking at it from Westerrn perspective, a Rasayana medicine is one that may be said to have five properties: viz., its actions as an adaptogen, an immunostimulant, an immunomodulator, a pro-host probiotic and an anti-mutagenic. To which we might add a sixth quality, that of tropism: an attraction toward a particular tissue, organ or organ system.

This volume (one of a series dedicated to and entitled Traditional Herbal Medicines for Modern Times) provides detailed information on fifty-three specific plants (from Aak - Calotropis to Vidhara - Argyreia speciosa) used in various Rasayana preparations and describes their therapeutic benefits for numerous disorders. It also contains on Rasayana formulations. It is a comprehensive reference suitable for anyone involved in medicinal and aromatic plant research.

In light of the extreme importance of Rasayana in ayurvedic therapy it is fitting that Dr. Harsharnjit Puri has authored this excellent reference work with detailed and very clear explanations on the plants, their uses in folklore and tradition as well as in ayurveda, their means of preparation, their therapeutic indications and references to pharmacological studies and references. Altogether this is a very good book on ayurvedic herbal medicine and required reading on the subject of herbs and the promotion of longevity.
