A good update but not 100% correct

I teach strategic management to undergraduates at an Australian university and have used the 2nd and 3rd editions of this book in the past three years to supplement the theory from our prescribed texts. It is heavy going in some places for the students but I like the book's rigour. The only criticism I have is that the 4th edition I just received has some minor errors. For example, pages 20-21 in the "Economic Profit versus Acccounting Profit" section has errors in the figures quoted for economic profit for McDonalds and Starbucks. I think this has occured because the 3rd edition figures have been carried over to the 4th edition without a proper proof-reading. Another minor mistake is that Table 10.2 (page 329) should read "Five-Forces Analysis of the Commercial Aciation Industry" and not "Five-Forces Analysis of the Chicago Hospital Market". Sorry to be pedantic but I guess these things can detract from the perceived quality of an otherwise top-quality text. Please note I will be buying your next edition in a couple of years. Cheers from "DownUnder Australia!"

Excellent Coverage but...

Filled with the most current information and packed full of the latest theories, this book delivers on it's promise to deliver an analytical base for economic strategy.
But some sections contain high fog counts and complicated discussions to describe relatively simple concepts.
Some of the examples offered as proof of theory seem forced. Instead of proving the theory, they show that other (undiscussed) strategic influences are at work. While expanded awareness is definitely a good thing, such examples tend to undermine the theories they purport to prove.

Clearing the fog in tackling corporate strategy

For those who have become disenchanted with the faddish rhetoric of corporate strategy, and seek more rigorous analytical grounding than offered in most "inspirational" business books, this text by three faculty members of Northwestern University and of Purdue University is refreshing.
The text recapitulates the key tools of micreconomic theory in a masterful introductory chapter which covers cost theory and game theory. The rest of the book is structured around the four classes of issues which the authors see as the essence of strategic analysis: firm boundaries, market and competitive analysis, position and dynamics, and internal organization.
The text is full of excellent examples and mini case studies from a wide range of industries.
I have not found it easy to find many other texts which achieve this balance of analytical rigor and practical business-oriented empirical focus.

Painfully unreadable

I'm sure I've read every one of Ms. Goudge's books and, for the most part, have enjoyed each of them. This one, however, was excruciating. I kept waiting for something to happen. Even the death of Jay's and Vivienne's baby was somewhat glossed over - it was obviously just a means of getting Jay single for the sake of the plot.

After I put down the book (unfinished) half way through, I re-read the acknowledgements. Ms. G. dutifully praised her editor. For what, I have absolutely NO idea. The discrepancies were glaring (things an EDITOR is supposed to catch - which is why they're called editors). For example, when Jay is first introduced, he's a farm boy from Iowa. Several chapters later, he's from Wisconsin. When Franny goes into labor she calls her doctor who is on the golf course and she mentions having interrupted his putting. Not two pages later, there's concern about her not making it to the hospital in time to give birth because of the snow storm. Snow storm? But her doctor is golfing!!! This was just too painful to put up with - so it got returned to the library without so much as a backward glance.

Stick to reading (or re-reading) her earlier novels. They're considerably better put together than this one (which I think became the orphan child in order to get her cook book through publishing).

Appealing characters, predictable storylines

Jay, Franny, Stevie, and Emerson became fast friends during their days at Princeton and have remained steadfast. Jay is married to Vivienne. Franny is still single wanting to find true love and have a baby desperately. Stevie has commitment issues since she never knew who her father was as a child. Emerson is a single mother faced with the needs and demands of her young daughter and dying mother. Franny helps Jay recover from a tragedy and Jay helps Franny with her dream. About the Author

Barbara Abdeni Massaad is a food writer, TV host, cookbook author, and a regular contributor to international cooking magazines. She won the the Gourmand Cookbook Award and the International Academy of Gastronomy Award for Mouneh: Preserving Foods for the Lebanese Pantry. Born in Beirut, Lebanon, she moved to Florida at a young age. She gained her real culinary experience while helping her father in their family-owned Lebanese restaurant Kebabs and Things. After moving back to Lebanon in 1988, and completing university there, she decided to pursue her passion for cooking. Determined to gain proper experience within the culinary world, Barbara trained with several renowned chefs at Lebanese, Italian, and French restaurants. She is also a founding member of Slow Food Beirut and an active participant in the International Slow Food movement. She lives in Beirut with her husband and three children.
Raymond Yazbeck is one of Lebanon's leading photographers focusing on his country's social and cultural heritage. His photographs have appeared in numerous local and international magazines. Since 1988, he has been the official photographer of the prestigious Baalbeck Festival. His books include The Stone, The Holy Valley and Expressions.

I waited several months before this was available through amazon, it was previously only by special order from the author in Lebanon. excellent flatbread recipes, I wouldn't call this a Lebanese cookbook per se, just focus on the title which is totally accurate.

Beautiful Photography & Authentic Recipes

This is a wonderful book which is part history and part cookbook. My fiance was raised in Lebanon and kept smiling when he saw the recipes and pictures of the locals. All of the recipes we tried so far are wonderful, and photography is beautiful - both of the dishes and of the local pictures and narratives offered throughout the book.

More Than A Cookbook..

I worked in the restaurant game for well over 20 years, and there was always two cuisine area's that I never got a chance to work with one was Chinese, couldn't speak the language, and the other was Middle Eastern. Now I must confess my lovely wife is Jewish, but somehow, I don't believe that Motzoh Balls, & Kugle are from the Middle East...The book is a wonderful story about bread, the roots of these flat breads, where they came from, how to make them, and the way to bake/cook them. The recipes are wonderful, and except for some of the ingrediants easy to prepare, good thing you are at Amazon they have most of what you need...The photos and great too...Now I want to go East to visit...and Eat..

Not convinced I am afraid

Except few preorders I usually do not buy new releases on its first day anymore, especially with Dreamspinner, I wait till they discount at least a little bit. But I am a sucker for any variations of "from enemies to lovers" trope and when I saw that this blurb promised at least some of that, even though it was more like from lovers to enemies to lovers, I was sold. I could not wait and clicked the buy button today.

The book is very well written, this writer certainly knows her craft, the writing is gripping, hence I could not in good conscience give less than three stars. But I was extremely dissappointed with the characterizations of two main characters. Chase is, eh, how to put it? Not exactly evil, but the one who closed off his heart and start doing cold heartless things. In fact, if you have seen american movie "Pretty woman", I invite you to imagine Edward Lewis and IMO you have Chase's basic characterization right there.He was just too one note to me and not at all multidimensional character, but Matias IMO was was even more one dimensional. Just suffering perfection, IMO.

And miscommunication, do not get me start on their miscommunication. Chase could not communicate to Mattias and to apologise for nine years and finally he starts "communicating" with what he did? The word idiot comes to mind. In fact I want to make it plural, for both of them.

I am sorry, I do apologise if I sound too emotional in this review, I should have probably waited few days before writing it rather than doing it right after I have read the book, but I feel that I have every right to vent about the characters. I want to slap them both, repeatedly :)

They are very good together though, I must say that, they have great chemistry and I did enjoy reading the second part more than I enjoyed first one.

And why why must the only woman who has some impact on the story be if not evil, then another unbelievably idiotic character who does hurtful things?

gripping storytelling

Chase is too bound to his father's approval - damaged goods, but not showing the signs of years of emotional trauma. Mathias is too perfect - almost naive and not suited for the rough and tumble of the business world, until we find he has his own spine of steel as the story rolls on. Miscommunication: more like act of sabotage by an antagonistic father. Female character: a shallow society gal who redeems herself only in the very end.

So here are your tropes, and it doesn't sound like much. That is precisely why I fell in love with this book, though: there are no natural disasters, alien invasions, dreadful disease, criminal violations or Acts of God that would squish these two guys together, tear them asunder, and then lead them to find one another again. Nope, it's all their own doing, and I can't tell you how refreshing it is to see writing that is not propped up by the crutches of outside force majeure. The drama is internal and so is the personal growth, for the both of them.

I would suggest that the reader does not view the structure of the story as "heavy on flashbacks", but rather as an intricate plait of related and mutually supportive story lines. The book as a whole is an exercise in masterful timeline manipulation. There are no holes, no loose ends, no unnecessary diversions. Full of surprises, every eye-opening event unfolds for a reason. The story would not have suffered, had the woman been a stronger person in many respects. The basic plot line would have still applied, but even so I am happy to recommend this book, knowing that I will end up rereading it in not too long.

This book certainly took me over, though not in a hostile way :)

Chase and Mathias. Wow, what a ride. These frenemies just... pushed me through some emotional hoops that left me so mad, so frustrated, and so pissed off I was practically shouting! And that's how I know a good book from a meh book. There were lots of times I gritted my teeth, but also times when I laughed out loud. Case in point: "Insert tab A to slot B." How's that for brilliant dialogue? :) Loved it! And the whole duel scene for the fate of a corporation? Nice!

It was so annoying that these guys behaved one way, and then inside they were completely different! Sucks, but that's reality. People do wear masks for the benefit of other people, always just a bit of pretense to ward off those who might get too close and see you for you who truly are, in fear of rejection and disappointing. And Chase's Dad? I had murder on the brain!

I was glad I was forewarned about the time jumps. No, this is not a time travel story. I mean the story jumps from the past to the present and back again. They happened a LOT. It took some getting used to, but I get why this method was chosen: Instead of knowing right off the bat what caused the guys to break up back in the day, we get breadcrumbs to follow. The contrast between the warm, loving past and the brutal, cold present was startling--and effective. I kept turning the pages in a feverish rush to find out more about these guys and what was going to happen to them.

I highly recommend this!

About the Author
J. P. Cushion, FRSA, was a much sought-after authority on decorative and collectable pottery and porcelain. Not the best choise

Good idea but not the best handbook.
Not enough information about manufactures of Europe etc, almost no info about changes of marks according to years.
Most of marks are not looking close to original.
A huge part for English pottery and porcelain - lucky English porcelain's collector :)

American readers will have their imaginations challenged by 14-year-old Kamkwamba's description of life in Malawi, a famine-stricken, land-locked nation in southern Africa: math is taught in school with the aid of bottle tops ("three Coca-Cola plus ten Carlsberg equal thirteen"), people are slaughtered by enemy warriors "disguised... as green grass" and a ferocious black rhino; and everyday trading is "replaced by the business of survival" after famine hits the country. After starving for five months on his family's small farm, the corn harvest slowly brings Kamkwamba back to life. Witnessing his family's struggle, Kamkwamba's supercharged curiosity leads him to pursue the improbable dream of using "electric wind"(they have no word for windmills) to harness energy for the farm. Kamkwamba's efforts were of course derided; salvaging a motley collection of materials, from his father's broken bike to his mother's clothes line, he was often greeted to the tune of "Ah, look, the madman has come with his garbage." This exquisite tale strips life down to its barest essentials, and once there finds reason for hopes and dreams, and is especially resonant for Americans given the economy and increasingly heated debates over health care and energy policy.

Reviewers, not all of whom remained dry-eyed, found Kamkwamba's story incredibly inspiring. They praised the book's sincerity: unlike the authors of many of today's memoirs, Kamkwamba and his coauthor do not include many digressions or tirades, but tell the story in a straightforward way from beginning to end. One critic, though impressed overall, was somewhat skeptical of this simplicity and wished that the book had included more about Malawi's cultural and economic context. But this critique may be relevant only to those already familiar with the subject. All others found The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind an illuminating story of Africa's past and present, as well as its future possibilities.

I tried and I made it!

William's world was not my world. His life was filled with ancient magic and mystery, security was having sacks of corn and not having them was death. A delicious treat wasn't got at the local ice cream shop, but by catching delicious flying ants or trapping birds between a slingshot and a stack of homemade Adobe bricks. Going to school was far from guaranteed, and when famine meant the teachers and students were starving to death, in the schools, it also wasn't a place to find food or shelter. The more William lost, the more he craved. He wanted to learn and when he was blocked from school by his inability to pay the fees, he found the free library, and a book about energy. He figured out how a windmill worked, and "I tried and I made it" barely covers the amazing fact that he built it from recycled trash, only after building the tools he needed, no drill? Heat a nail to red hot and insert it in a corn cob for a handle. The windmill was only one step in his understanding. He had to figure out AC/DC and voltage and insulation, he had to figure out how to make a generator and switches and a circuit breaker to keep his created electricity from burning down the grass roofed hut they lived in, and when his wires collapsed the termite riddled supports of the roof he had to call in the chickens to get the termites out of his bedding. He blended science with hard work and creativity to bring light and a water pump to his village, and to make the world realize that even the starving kids in Malawi have much to offer.

I love this book. I loved reading it and I have bought several as gifts. It is beautiful and inspiring. Be aware that there are several disturbing passages in it. Most are okay for younger readers and describe truthfully the extreme hunger he faced (I can never forget the passage where he describes boiling leather for food), but there were a few bits about his early family life which were too mature for me to give this to my middle schooler. So I would recommend the "Young Reader's Version" for kids who aren't ready for this. But it is a very, very good book and inspiring story.

A marvelous story of human ingenuity.

This a marvelous true story of 14 year old boy in the remote part of remote country (Malawi) who is forced to drop out of school in a time a famine and decides to teach himself all about electricity and how to make a windmill to produce it for his family using and old bicycle generator and all kinds of odd parts to create a every aspects of a system distribution system - wiring, circuit breakers, a backup battery kept charged for when the wind doesn't blow -- every single thing. His source of information is an English science textbook. Since he didn't know English, he had gto depend on the illustrations for instructions. He became quite by accident and has now finished his college. Written in the first person with help of a professional writer, it is compelling reading.The description of what its like to survive a year of famine is worth the price of the book alone.
