This one just wasn't as funny as the others

This one just wasn't as funny as the others. I think a large part of this was some of the characters. I didn't like reading the parts about Randy (who was introduced in book 3) and I hated Denise who was almost always with Randy. Situations that might have been funny were instead spoiled by these two. In addition, I found Tim to be pretty annoying during book 3 and absolutely hated him in this one. It might just be his character arc, but the way he interacts with the other characters drove me up the wall.

That said, the final setpiece for this one was definitely the funniest of all the books. It's just that a lot of the smaller laughs fell flat for me.

To sum up, not enough Cooper, way too much Denise and Tim.

Extremely Creative and Funny

Another hilarious installment in a great series. I'm going to miss the former status of one of the main characters whose antics never failed to stop my ability to breathe. Hopefully Bevan has something in mind to continue providing that particular brand of humor in the next book.

Some of the humor is getting old, but Bevan handles it in a very self-aware way since we are kind of stuck with it for now. Cooper could really use a charisma-boosting item or something.

This series and the stormlight archive are the only two series I buy instantly on release and switch from whatever I was reading at the time.

The series keeps getting better

Once again, Robert Bevan shows that he knows just how to raise the stakes in high fantasy, then drag them through the gutter, making the reader laugh like a loon the whole way. But it's not just dick and fart jokes; we also get treated to satisfying character development, a light seasoning of mordant social commentary, and hilarious enough blasphemy to keep even the damned cackling as their spit turns.

A battle-scarred veteran of Korea, Hackworth served successive tours in Vietnam, becoming increasingly alarmed by declining standards in the Army and the dead-end policy in Southeast Asia. Matters came to a head during a 1971 television interview in which he criticized Army leadership, training and tactics in the field. For this the colonel was shamefully hounded into premature retirement, a potential Army superstar who was suddenly perceived as a dangerous renegade, according to this memoir written with freelancer Sherman. The engrossing autobiography of a fierce and fiercely outspoken warrior, it is also an inside account of the demoralization of a once-proud army during a period when "no one could afford to tell the truth, make an error, or admit to ignorance." The colonel makes sweeping condemnations in this passionate, profane, sometimes intemperate book (admirers of military historian S.L.A. Marshall will cringe at Hackworth's savage attack). In the end he calls the army "this rotten whore I'd been in love with for twenty years." Photos. Military Book Club main selection; author tour.

Colonel Hackworth left the Army and went into exile over the conduct of the Vietnam War. Like all good autobiographies, his often tells more than he intended. This is as earnest and self-revealing as Anthony B. Herbert's Herbert: The Making of a Soldier (LJ 9/1/82), but less laconic. Excellent book. Well written, easily read, thought provoking. Is long, but not cumbersome.
I first read 'About Face' written by Col. David Hackworth during the late 1980s. I found it extremely valuable in helping me...a woman with little knowledge of anything military, understand better my children's dad, a land based Viet Nam combat vet and the problems he had to deal with before his death.
As the wife of yet a second Viet Nam combat vet, special forces, I suggest this book for anyone who wants a better understanding of the debt of gratitude and respect we citizens owe those willing to serve in The United States Military.

should be required reading for all seving military leaders

I first came to hear of ABOUT FACE from a friend and fellow NCO in Korea. He said I might think it was good, Was that an understatement. I read About Face in one fourteen hour plane ride back to Korea. I've read it three more times so far and recommend it to all my friends deserving the title Non-Commisioned Officer. I truly believe that all military leaders should read this and take from it; Hack's wisdom and experiance dealing with the military, Integrity and soldiering.

A Great Man, A Great Book, A Great Read

I bought this book when I was about 11 years old and a big fan of "war stories". I am now approaching twenty and have read this book at least once a year since first purchasing it, to the extent that it is now in three parts and the photographs have fallen out. This book is an intense, gripping, readable but most of all honest and believable account of one of America's greatest warriors and his experiences...from the forested slopes of Trieste in 1946 to being chased around Washington DC by Army Intell goons in 1971, this book, while entertaining, will also teach you everything you need to know about duty, honour,bravery and honest patriotism, qualities that come hard to find in the era of Iran-Contra, Tailhook, Whitewater and the like...
This book will make you laugh, cry and think.

Yes, it's Ajnas alright, but...

Let me begin by saying that there is value to this book merely because of the fact that it IS a translation of the Arabic Solomonic work Al-Ajnas by Berechiah. In that respect, it's very interesting and groundbreaking to now have translations being made from what is a vast trove of Arabic occult material whose elements, such as the Picatrix, inspired so much of our Western occult tradition. This, after all, is why I was eager to buy it. It does fulfill this in that it includes Arabic names of all the familiar (and some unfamiliar) Solomonic angelic and demonic hierarchy and is very much apparently an accurate translation of a never before seen work in English. With that said, however, I must express my extreme disappointment as to the tackiness of how it was presented, which suggests a sense of slight regard for the material and the tradition at hand. The pages of the book are printed with the downright cheesiest "weathered" pattern, full of pixellation and so much black smear, which serves to make the black and white pages look like cheap newsprint. It's like when you make a treasure map as a kid with plain typing paper and then take a cigarette lighter to burn the edges to make it look "old". All of this not only reduces the aesthetic appeal of the book, but also its academic and even spiritual appeal, as its effect smacks of the mass produced paperback Simon Necronomicon, and serves to class it at that level. When compared with similarly priced hardcover editions of other classic Solomonic works, such as those by Skinner and Peterson, this book really pales as an investment. If you're interested in seeing this as an example of Arabic occultism in the Solomonic tradition, it's far more worth it to find pdf or etext versions of Ajnas online than to invest in a physical version with this kind of appearance.

Fragmented but informative.

I would have to say that as a grimoire it works out well enough. The layout is relatively easy to deal with. However the manner in which the conjurations are written are less then pleasing. Leaving holes and gaps in the conjuration such to the like where the author intentionally leaves key parts out. More time then is having to track down the Arabic translations, as it is not a clear distinction of which names, words and various summons are supposed to maintain their origin dialect, and which ones the author has made English.

Much to the grimoire tradition these passages do some justice as to the origin of certain conjurations and exorcisms, it takes the reader some time to piece together the usable bits of information out of this work. Addressing to the same potency of some works contained there-in it hints at other paths then just the Allah singularity. However if you wanted to have a how to make use of the Koran in the most effective ways possible against the natural spirits I suppose this work is alright to do that.

I give it 3 stars as it will likely sit on my shelf for it lacks the finished information which it promises in its sales Description. It would have earned 4 if the work was complete, 5 if the translation in the text was clearly distinct from the Arabic and English versions, offering both up to the reader. If you want a project to tinker with, rebuilding, and rewriting like the Necronomicon of Simon, then this is the sort of book for you. Its expensive for what it is, at least the cover holds up well to dust.

Complicated Yet Workable

As a practicing Sorcerer for 20+ years, I am a grimoire nut & enjoy Sorcery in the Solomonic tradition even though I do not buy into the whole Judeo-Xian mythos. With that said I have often got results using Solomonic Sorcery whether it was with QBL Tree of Life Spirits OR the Spirits listed in the Lemegeton's Goetia.

With that said, I happened to interview Ninevah on my website & was excited about the forthcoming book, "Deadly Names" which I have & will write a review on at a later date. When I ordered that book from Ninevah's site, I saw this & ordered it as well. I was quite surprised at what appears to be more of a system that is spoken/incanted rather than talismanic/seal oriented like the Sloane manuals.

Rouhaniat Magic (re: Arabic Magic) relies more on spoken word repetition for result than the use of talismans like say the Goetia or Key of Solomon uses. Often you will summon a Djinn by repeating its name say 10,000 times which seems like a ridiculous amount but it can (& does) go quite quickly once you're into it & using some sort of method of counting like say a rosary.

I found the invocation on pages 28 for binding tongues to be useful. I had a client who told me she was being mercilessly tortured by some idiot at her place of work & asked me to do something for her. I decided to use this invocation for a period of seven days & I repeated it 7 times each day. She reported back to me that the woman's mean comments began to subside to the point after a couple of weeks, the woman left her completely alone. While it's not a immediate solution, it did work.

Why it may have taken so long to work is possibly because I did not work my way through the system & get properly initiated into it. Rhouhaniat is a results oriented system but that given, I do believe this book holds a lot more for the Solomonic tradition than most feel.

One of the annoying things is that it constantly uses 'Peace Be Upon Him' when the notes mention some historical holy figure like Moses, Solomon, Mohammed & the like but that's what many Rouhaniat practitioners did in ancient times. It's an Arabic thing of respect. Remember this is a manual that was translated from ancient Aramaic.

The back cover explains that this is a book that is based on the works of Asaph ben Berechiah who allegedly was the vizier to the real King Solomon - at least according to Islamic folklore. While I'm not interested in the mythology of Islam, Judaism or Xianity, I find the Magic of these systems fascinating. "Here's something forbidden!" Such magic was/is forbidden in Islamic culture then & now & many have died for their practicing this very sort of Magic.

The book DOES have seals listed though they tend to be like the seals in the Key of Solomon - covering groups of Spirits rather than individual ones such as the Goetia has.

It appears to be a complete system in & of itself. It differs from the Western Solomonic material in that it does not list equipment to be used which is presumably found in other Rouhaniat sources yet to be translated. For the practitioner like myself, I am confident to summon the Djinn using my own equipment. You may wish to delve into an understanding of Rouhaniat before you start to work with this manual.

Also, Djinns are notorious for being difficult to summon & control. They're hot tempered & angry a lot of the time. Thus is this a manual for the faint of heart? I would not recommend it for Novices but would not have a problem with someone who is an intermediate level student well versed in the Solomonic systems of the past to work with it, safely & get results.

Overall I gave it four out of five stars simply because it is a complex system but the book does not offer liner or end/foot-notes to help explain things.

This work was a labour of love for the author. It is a translation of key Italian military manuals on the use of the sabre which are the foundation of both modern sport fencing and its historical counterpart. It is also the last link in a lineage that goes back to the establishment of the Italians as the masters of the military weapon and its civilian counterpart. Mr Holzman is the student of William Gaugler, who was a student of Giorgio Santelli, whose father, Italo Santelli, was one of the founders of the Hungarian school. The book not only is a translation of Capt Settimo del Frate's manual, but a clearly written step-by-step method of learning the dueling sabre. Included are synoptic tables of exercises which, when learned, will raise one's mastery of the weapon to a new level.

A must buy book for practical sword skills.

What an excellent book, if you have any intrest in Sabre or Sword this is a must have book. I find myself not able to put it down, the author shines a bright light on an ancient art. As a martial arts instructor i find this book most beneficial for anyone that picks up a sword regardless of what style you practice, i have no doubts in highly recommending this wonderful book
