Big-time mobsters, All-American athletes and high-powered lawyers are but a few of the intriguing characters who appear in Porter's well-researched, action-packed account of the 1978-1979 Boston College point-shaving scandal. Porter, a veteran sportswriter and columnist, traces the scandal from its creation in the summer of 1978 through the trials of the players and mobsters in 1981; particularly fascinating is his exploration of how the scam affected the players mentally and the relationship between them and the gangsters. His journalistic style is detailed but never slow, fair to all sides but not soft. He admits when his information is unclear, but still manages to present a coherent examination of the events. Porter also expertly portrays his primary characters, who include Jim Sweeny, an Academic All-American and a Naismith award winner who is described by the gangsters as "the perfect front," and ex-mobster-turned-star government witness Henry Hill, the man who wrote Wiseguy, the book that the movie Goodfellas was based on. Porter devotes the first part of the book to the planning and execution of the scheme to shave points; there he recounts the history of Boston College basketball and the program's situation at the time of the scandal. He then examines the '78-'79 season game by game, showing how the sinister plan unfolded. The second part of the book, which relates the details of the investigation and the trials of the case in 1981, is even more absorbing than the first. Almost true

I was disappointed with this book, as while it seemed to be well-researched, it is impossible to capture the spirit of the time or the personalities so many years later. It also happens that my interest in the book relates to personal knowledge of several of the atheletes involved. I think that the author was not fair to Ernie Cobb or several of the other players, but he was overly sympathetic to Jim Sweeney. I believed then, as I do now, that it really was Sweeney's show. Nevertheless, the players and their motivations get a lot of play in the book, but you can never really know what happened as you cannot see into the human heart, especially 20 years later. I believe that the real point to be made is that under the wrong circumstances, anyone can be had and the resulting tragedy can have lifelong consequences. The book does capture this important aspect of the whole case which makes it worth the read.

A truly enjoyable read.

Without buttressing its merit with Mafia hype or superfluous detail, Fixed seamlessly weaves together the distressing tales of a real-life cast of characters guided by greed. Porter obviously researched his subject thoroughly, and his unbiased presentation of facts and ability to anticipate and clarify potential questions and inconsistencies compelled this reader to eagerly turn the pages without questioning the credibility of this remarkably captivating account. I highly recommend it.

A great book! Highly recommended.

A little gambling on college sports is basically harmless, right? This book will change your mind. I'm sure none of the players in Porter's book feel "unharmed" by the fallout of Boston College's point shaving scandal. Young careers, reputations, and lives were ruined, and that is tragic. There's great tension from the beginning, even if you know the historical outcome of the games and trials. Plus, if you enjoyed Goodfellas, you'll love meeting Henry Hill again, even if he's not the glamorized Ray Liotta version!

A fine read

After reading the other two reviews of this book, I had to chime in. This book is, I think, a fantastic piece of work. It is exactly what the title says it is. Edmundson pits the theorists up against the literature they theorize about, and asks, "Which one leaves us with a better understanding of the world and more hope for a better future?" The answer, as you might imagine, is literature.

If you have a prejudice against the notion that creative writers might know what they're talking about, and that the creative work can be read "as theory" itself, then this book probably won't convince you otherwise (as the other reviews make clear). But if you're intrigued by the idea that the poets might not be as bad as Plato made out, then I think you'll find the book to be nothing less than a treat.

Submission or emancipation

If you find the obsessive truth holders who chase, pester, harass and blabber; then, this book is a balm. After reading it you'll realise that your friends were right, the best way to deal with a fanatic is to avoid them. If you've ever read a book and found yourself brow beaten by some bozo with a multi-coloured interpretive fan on his/her head; then, this book will calm you. It reminds us that human consciousness does not have to be funneled into carefully moulded plastic tubes that mirror the conceptual mosaics designed by the bozos. Should we submit and cry as they bore us till blood seeps out of our ears? Or should we skip with book in hand to the emancipation tune written by the great Professor Edmundson? Nazi collaborators always produce theories that aim to control us in that lovely fascist fashion. They love submission and they hate when we refuse to join the club. So, Colonel Klink de Man and his cohort of obsessed conformists hate this book. It is not intellectual enough, meaning it refused to propel thought through those plastic tubes; therefore, it did not arrive at the expected end. Imagine writing a book that frees readers to return to literature minus the tyranny of the academic. It's tantamount to freeing science from the fundamentalists. Imagine science as a liberating force: not as a new form of fanaticism. Imagine literary criticism as interpretation: not as ossification. Thank you Mark Edmundson. Highly recommended.

SUCH a one-star book!

I was so happy to see the "Not worth the cost" review. My only A+ in grad school was a paper slamming this sorry little book. I remember Edmundson's going on for pages about how terrible Paul de Man supposedly is, and then, when it came time to illustrate WHY PdM is so bad ... Edmundson does a reading of a Wordsworth poem in what he claims is the manner of De Man, instead of looking at one of De Man's own readings! And yet this guy is a Professor ... further evidence that English is not a "discipline."

The title should be "Pragmatism Against Literature and Philosophy." I think Edmundson has his heart in the right place, but he appears to've been spending too much time around Richard Rorty, literally and on the page.

terriffic

While this is only a soft cover book, it is a terriffic resource. It's outline format lays out all of the common issues seen in forensic pathology, with all of the various arguements made by other forensic pathologists described in easy to understand terms. I am a trial attorney who tries murder cases for a living and this book is a tremendous resource - the best I've ever seen.

Cliffnotes of Forensic Pathology

I am only as disappointed as I am with this book because of the price. Starting with the positives, the book is organized well, with a middle section of 10 or so colored photos. It is well written and easy to understand. However, it is miniscule. The book has 200 pages of actual text, thinner than most novels. It reads like a study book, or an outline you would make for class. Each subject has the bare minimum of information needed. No actual case studies or examples. I am most disappointed with the images. Most are hand drawn line images, there are only 10 or so actual photographs in the book. They are black and white in the pages but the middle section has them in color, but they are the same images! Why bother to print them twice? I am also comparing this to the Spitz and Fisher's book, but for half the price I was expecting a little better than an image of a stab wound and a few sentences on it in a chapter. If you need the bare minimum of information on forensics, or you are just looking to explore the topic a little more than for $20-30 this would be fine. But for $50, this book with its lack of examples, explanations, case studies and photographic images is really a bit steep.

My primary text book was a very high level book that appeared as if it were written for experienced medical professionals. This text book covered almost the exact same information but was written in a manner that those outside of the medical profession could easily follow along with and comprehend.

A Photographer's Review

As a photographer who epitomizes the idea of conquering an environmental setting or lighting circumstance to the best of my ability, learning about the disciplinary ideas expressed in Ogilvie's work on his website interested me in learning more.

The book's front cover fits the title as, to quote Lao Tzu, "Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is power". Suffice it to say that this book is empowering me to be a better artist, better friend, better husband, and better businessperson. I am broadening my scope in how the tenets of conquering oneself can suit multiple areas of being a living soul.

My advice is to don't procrastinate -- order this book and change your habits! :-)

I thought there was something wrong with me...

until I read this book. The ideas and concepts that I read have been dancing delightfully around in my gray matter for the past few days. The description of those with ADD seemed an accurate description of my personality and I've spent many years feeling like a square peg squeezing into a round hole.

Then I learned about the "subtle conspiracy against self-discipline" and that who I am should not be measured by what I do or don't get done in the course of a day. You have no idea of how my soul was soothed when I learned that my struggles are not in vain, I just have to "tweak" them a little.

The statement from the book that hit home the most was that "every time you allow yourself to be interrupted by a trivial concern; you actually pay for that interruption with a piece of your future".

Now I cut myself a little slack and practice being focused and single-minded. I'm also learning how to arrange my life in order to eliminate unnecessary distractions. Little-by-little, one step at a time.

I love this book! The insights and understanding that I've gained have given me the tools I need to take back my future. I'm truly inspired!

The movement soon evolved to envision creating a national museum, and Wilkins follows the endless obstacles through the decades, culminating in his honor of becoming a member of the Presidential Commission that wrote the plan for creating the museum and how, with support of both Black and White Democrats and Republicans, Congress finally authorized the museum.
In September 2016, exactly 100 years after the movement to create it began, the Smithsonian will open the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The book's title is inspired in part by James Baldwin, who testified in Congress in 1968 that "My history… contains the truth about America. It is going to be hard to teach it." A brief history of the creation of the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

Shortly after the conclusion of the Civil War, a "Grand Review," or a massive military parade, was organized to celebrate the accomplishments and sacrifices of the Union soldiers. Although 200,000 veterans marched over two days, African-American soldiers felt disenfranchised from the celebratory affair, in which they were relegated to second-class status. George Washington Williams, a well-known African-American historian, responded to this under representation by proposing the construction of a monument commemorating the African-American soldier. In 1915, a re enactment of the Grand Review was staged, and an organization called the National Memorial Association formed in response to it, which officially advocated for Williams' proposal. By the 1920s, the original idea of a monument had grown to encompass a full memorial building of some kind, which would not only honor the martial valor of African-Americans, but also acknowledge their contributions to the United States in other domains. In 1929, President Calvin Coolidge signed legislation into law that sanctioned the creation of a National Memorial Building to Negro Achievement and Contributions to America, but it was a stillborn measure, radically underfunded. Yet another bill was introduced in 1965 to study the feasibility of a museum devoted to African-American history, but that project, too, died from neglect, as did another in 1995. Eventually, however, the National African American Museum and Cultural Complex was formed, and Wilkins, the debut author of this book, was its president. He's spent 20 years researching this work, which is nearly as much of a purposeful labor of love as the museum itself. In it, he skillfully relates not only the myriad practical problems—political, financial, and otherwise that slowed the museum project down, but also addresses its moral dimension, as well as the sometimes-tepid support the project had in the African American community. Ultimately, the author furnishes a rigorous history that captures the struggle of African-American people and the proud contributions they made to a country that did not always accept them: "The beauty of the African American story is that the toil of our people has not been in vain," he writes. Given all the historical minutiae that Wilkins provides, it's a surprisingly gripping historical drama.

About the Author
Robert L. Wilkins is a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He served as chairman of the site and building committee of the Presidential Commission that Congress established to plan the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Prior to becoming a judge, he was an attorney with the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia and a partner in a large private law firm. He is a graduate of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology and Harvard Law School.

I gave 15 of the "Long Road to Hard Truth" to my family members and have already gotten very good feedback. My brother and his extended family visited the Museum on Christmas Eve and were very impressed but also saddened and angered that we seem to be going in such a "Zig Zag manner as noted by Lillian Smith in "Killers of the Dream".
