An excellent historical survey from various disciplines.

This book is an excellent, and largely unbiased, discussion of CALIBAN (the character from Shakespeare's The Tempest) and traces the evolution of his perception as reflected in literary criticism, culture/politics, theatrical performance (stage and film), poetry, and visual art. An actor myself, when doing research on Shakespeare roles, the most efficient technique I've found is investigation of stage history. Most of the relevant literary criticism has at one time or another been reflected in stage history. Also, stage history is something I find more easily applicable to performance than literary criticism--for obvious reasons. In light of this bias, the only disappointment I had in the book is that I would have liked a longer chapter on stage history. Nonetheless, as the book surveys CALIBAN's history from so many perspectives, one comes away with a strong appreciation of the wide range of exploration available in playing CALIBAN. The numerous black & white figures are an added plus. Finally, any actor playing CALIBAN and hard-pressed to find research time would do well to at least read the chapter on scriptural analysis relevant to CALIBAN and the final chapter, which summarizes the entire book. Directors and designers would benefit from perusal of this text; however, the book does stick fairly close to its subject of CALIBAN, specifically, rather than The Tempest, in general. To close, Shakespearean actors would certainly benefit from more character-specific surveys like this book.

SECOND EDITION is the text for IACA certification - new edition do in 2014

As a new edition is in the early stages of production it is important to note that this review is of the Exploring Crime Analysis Second Edition. It is the study text for the International Association of Crime Analysis (IACA) certification exam to become a Certified Law Enforcement Analyst (CLEA). This edition text is in the early stages of a major rewrite. The new edition should be in publication by the end of 2014. If you are looking to take the test of this year there may be some changes in how the test is written and I am not sure that there are any plans to offer it at any other meetings this year (Sept. 2013). It is possible to take the test by computer. This can be done by making arrangements through your Human Relations division.

Exploring Crime Analysis is a collection of 20 readings, each authored by one or more selected editors. Editors were selected as area experts. Topics attempt cover every special skill a working crime analyst may need to employ. Every chapter has a corresponding section on the test. Chapters such as creating crime analysis documents and making presentations may feel lightweight even if the style can be academic. In the chapters on qualitative, quantitative, and inferential statistics, the reader will traverse from basic concepts to advanced and demanding methods of applied mathematics. This contributes to an uneven feel to the book. Parenthetically, crime analysts working in sheriff's offices and police departments may find an aggressive disinterest in internally created documents that include advanced statistics.

People come into the field of crime analysis with varied educational backgrounds. Those who have been in the field for more than a few years may have no college experience. It is now possible to get advanced degrees before your first day on the job. Most of this book reads like a graduate school text. There is a tendency among many of the contributors to begin their topics by explaining and giving examples and failing to be as clear when introducing more advanced topics where there is a greater need of longer explanations and specific examples. Some items are repeated (there are at least three or four definitions given for inductive and deductive reasoning) while other items are presented without any clarification. There are some specific instructions on the use of so-called "em" dashes, "en" dashes and hyphens; however only the keyboard location of the hyphen is given (it's the minus key).

The IACA purposes in producing Exploring Crime Analysis appear to be: firstly to ensure that all crime analysts have a single place to seek out instructions on what can be a sprawling demand for skills; secondly to ensure that CLEA is a document awarded on merit and a meaningful statement about the skill sets the holder can be expected to exhibit.

In summation Exploring Crime Analysis second edition is an excellent resource book for the practicing or student crime analyst. I hesitate to recommend it as your first crime analysis book and sincerely hope it is not your last. If you are not sure about becoming a crime analyst your openness to, if not enthusiasm about learning the skills in this book speaks definitively to your future as an analyst. If you are working as a crime analyst this book is a resource that can remind you of the breath of tools that should be in use in your department.

The most useful book of music theory/songwriting I've seen

I've paged through many books about songwriting trying to find a way to understand how to construct music to complement my lyrics. This book finally solved my problem and has absolutely revolutionized my songwriting. I wouldn't recommend this book for someone who is a complete novice in music theory because it moves very quickly through a great number of topics. I took notes to make sure I got everything I could out of it! I haven't looked at another music theory book since. If you're serious about writing better music, buy this book!

Finally theory applied to real songs...

If you're sick of theory books that only use author's etudes or "Grandfather's Clock" type traditional songs as context, then this book is for you. Dozens and dozens of real, commercial hit songs are used as specific examples to illustrate theory. Use this book with iTunes music store to hear the "big concept" theory (ie. Song Structure, Modulation, Groove, etc.) and use your own instrument to really dig into the specifics.

Do you want to know how Billy Joel came up with those chord changes? Do you want to apply creative harmony (chords) to a melody that you can't get out of your head? Do you want to make your songs more interesting melodically, harmonically or rhythmically? It's all in this little book (and much more).

Do you play and sing a lot of songs? Have you noticed similarities between them? Some similarities are obvious (1,4,5 chords for example). Some are less obvious and some are downright confounding. Often you have this tickle in the back of your brain that there is something more important going on.

There is.

Why does this chord work so well here? Why do Steely Dan, Stevie Wonder, Jimmy Hendrix, Dire Straits and so many other group's songs stand out? They sound so unique as to be instantly identifiable. Is there some pattern here?

Yes.

I'm so glad Jai Joseph did not go down the path of these BS internet sites advertising "The Secrets of Songwriting" or "The Secrets of Theory." There's no hype here. It's simply a very organized approach to applying music theory to the craft of songwriting.

I'm a guitar teacher in baltimore. I use this book with my more advanced students. Some do not read anything but guitar tablature (and they don't want to learn standard notation). They still benefit enormously from this book. Some are not songwriters (and they don't want to be), but they do want to be able to learn more songs. They want to learn them faster and retain them over time. They want to be able to figure them out just by listening to the CD. This book has been a godsend for them.

A very practical and easy understood approach to songwriting

The author is clearly a seasoned songwriter with an abundance of knowledge and skill. Yet, he is able to explain the technicalities of songwriting in such a way that the not-so-professional hobbyist songwriter like myself can follow. Having not had formal music theory training myself I could easily catch up with the essentials without feeling it was a hopeless situation. The author managed to keep my attention and deal with the music theory in such a fashion that I could not wait to see his next topic. I found the approach very practical. In fact, I could immediately apply what I learned and the results were immediate. Still, an enormous amount of information is contained in this book and I am sure I shall refer back to the detail many times in the future. It has also helped me better understand songs that already became hits and the book is full of real examples.

This is an invaluable textbook for anyone interested in cutaneous surgery

I believe this textbook is an invaluable tool for any cutaneous surgeon who performs skin flaps.

As a young Mohs surgeon, this textbook has quickly become my go-to “guide” of choice when considering options for repair. The simple regional approach is very helpful when using the text as a “real-time” reference. Of the variety of defects I encounter, I seem to always find a similar one outlined in this text.

The multitude of excellent pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative photographs of a variety of defects sets this textbook apart.

Including many intra-operative photographs of the defects with the tissue clearly marked with a “magic marker” greatly aides in visualizing how the tissue will move to create the final repair.

There are a variety of defects included, from small to large, with repairs that range from relatively simple to very complex. While many of us may not encounter some of these larger defects on a daily-basis, they provide some of the best instructive examples to help better understand the complexity and nuances of tissue movement.

The included DVD is also an extremely helpful way to review common types of tissue movement.

The first several chapters of the textbook beautifully outline and explain tissue movement, different types of flaps, and many pros and cons of each in different situations. I have re-read these chapters several times already, and each time I find something new.

If you are looking for one textbook to provide an elegant and comprehensive overview of facial flaps, as well as excellent photographs that will help you in the real world, this textbook is indispensable.
