Financial accounting is undergoing a period of unprecedented change. The FASB and IASB have been working together to issue converged accounting standards that will dramatically change key reporting areas, and more generally have sought to converge accounting standards over time. In late 2011, the SEC will announce its decision on whether large public companies in the U.S. will be able to choose whether to report under U.S. GAAP or IFRS or if all companies are anticipated to be reporting under IFRS in the near future. So, while there currently is considerable overlap between U.S. GAAP and IFRS, and that overlap is increasing as convergence continues, important differences remain.
To help instructors deal with the challenging environment, the Spiceland team is committed to providing current, comprehensive and clear coverage of intermediate accounting. The 7th edition reflects this commitment with the following innovations.

Eh...
By Tiffany
I've had some great textbooks and some crummy ones, but this one is definitely in the bottom half of this list. The best part of this textbook is the little blurbs on almost every page that give you more in depth information about the subject at hand. However, the text itself is unnecessarily wordy. It says the same thing in multiple ways, not in a more explanatory way either, but a different sentence saying the same thing. It can be mildly difficult to navigate as well because some chapters are split into multiple sections so the moment you think you're done with the chapter, think again. They are sometimes separate by several pages of "concept review" pages. Everything is kind of all over the place with this book. And the flow from topic to topic could probably be better organized too. All in all, if it's a required textbook there's not much you can do, but be prepared to use the online tools more than the textbook. Take screen shots of the homework problems if you're using connect and study from those. The book is pretty worthless to learn from.

Horribly worded
By ROLAND
This is one of the worst textbooks I have ever had to use for a college course. Forget about self teaching yourself with this lump of coal as well...
Chapter material: vague
How the concepts are described: again, very vague.
I've gone over half of this book twice (ch 1 - 11), and I still feel I miss things when I read the chapters over. What I mean when I say "miss" is that once you begin to do the exercises, you'll see you didn't get the full picture. If you are being instructed, good on you. That will help (if you have a good professor who uses class time wisely). Do not rely on this textbook. Use other material to help you... and maybe find another textbook to use in conjunction!
I also had the connect access. Having the online textbook is handy ( I have the 6th edition - foreign version paperback as well. Which contain all the same problems as 7th edition, just organized differently) and there are powerpoints if you like to listen to learn. There is also a "practice quizzes and test" section for every chapter, so you can gauge how well you understand a concept.
You'll learn more by watching videos on youtube about the various subjects, and reading internet articles rather than wasting your time reading this monstrosity.
If you want in depth chapters, try another textbook. I've transferred to the Keiso textbook for my self teaching. Working pretty good. Some things, such as the process of performing the notes receivable problems are explained slightly different in the Keiso book. It focuses highly (meaning, more in-depth) on using the concept of time value of money with NR and so on. Spiceland's section on NR is vague.
A small tip: If you're in a class or self-teaching, make sure you have the solutions manual. If you like to jump into doing (many) exercises/problems right after reading sections in a chapter, and learn better that way, solution manual for any IA textbook is a must! Especially for a book like this.
