A Compelling Unknown Force - The Dyatlov Pass Incident: AKA

In February, 1959 nine young hikers on a cross country ski trip mysteriously died under horrific circumstances. It is one of the great mysteries of our times. They would be found with missing eyes, even a missing tongue, crushed bones, and stripped of their clothes in minus 50 degree temperatures . Theories range from their being being murdered by the CIA to space aliens, to "Abominable Snowmen". This book explores this famous incident using a technique known as "Higher criticism" to explain their terrifying deaths. It provides hitherto unexplored answers and is now the leading source on the incident, debunking all previous explanations while pointing to twelve points of overwhelming evidence that tell us what really happened on this tragic night of horror.

Great storytelling + rich evidence + excellent investigation!
By Edward Batten
This book delivers excellent storytelling that conveys both a rich factual history and a satisfyingly logical analysis of the mystery. It was the perfect depth of treatment for the person like me who wants a fast, engaging read that will really set out the facts with keen investigative insight and give you a conclusion that inspires confidence.

I was attracted to this title by the high star rating, the customer reviews praising the author's hypothesis, and the excellent price. This book wonderfully delivers in all those areas. Plus, the author really leaves you in a place where you understand what happened and how the evidence relates to not only his own unique theory, but also how it relates to other theories like avalanche, UFO's, government conspiracies, Yeti, etc. The book covers all the angles, so no one and no theory is left out or belittled.

The story is told from two primary perspectives: (1) that of the the master tracker/investigator, Anton Sergei, who is involved in first searching for and later determining what happened to the lost campers; and (2) that of a real time narrative, which follows the campers through their adventure and ultimate tragedy. Both perspectives maintain the core mysteries until near the end, which allows you to reason along as you go. The real time perspective lets you really feel what they were facing. Trust me, this approach works beautifully, and the two approaches amplified each other and deepened my understanding of events.

I won't give away the unique hypothesis of the book regarding the core mystery, but I will comment on some areas of mystery and how well I think the book did regarding each. One mystery (that I consider the CORE mystery) surrounds why the campers left the tent as they did. The book does an excellent job of explaining the evidence and why the offered hypothesis is the best fit from the author's perspective. There could be additional factors, but the hypothesis does explain why they exited as they did.

The order of death and cause of death of each camper is perfectly handled. The state and switching of clothes issue is perfectly handled for each camper. The missing eyes of some victims IS explained (despite some reviewer comments to the contrary). The missing tongue of one victim IS explained. Were the campers crazy/drunk/etc. is also explained.

There are a few minor grammar issues that do not interfere with understanding, but they may irritate some grammarians out there. You know who you are!

This is the third book I have read on this subject. No one will ever know for certain what happened to the nine students, but this book I believe comes closest to a logical explanation. The author very cleverly sucks you into a false supposition about halfway through the book. You think that he is going to come up with some silly theory about a yeti or some other creature. I almost quit reading at that point but luckily I stuck with it. He goes on to propose a very plausible theory of what happened. I think I will need to read no more books on this subject. If you are interested in this tragedy I think you will find the book very worthwhile.

This is a good read and a very plausible explanation
By pjf
This is a good read and a very plausible explanation, far more reasonable than some theories put about in books done by legitimate publishers. The maps and photos were extensive and a very useful addition. It alternates between the story of the hikers and the thoughts of the guide hired by the government to find the hikers. Jumping back and forth between the two is mildly annoying to me, but it is a fairly standard device. The guide's viewpoint is one I hadn't read/heard from before. While it's a short book, it still quite comprehensive for what it attempts. This therefore is a good introduction to this incident (particularly given the price), and the author's theory may well be correct.

Be aware some of the photos are grisly, (hard to avoid given the subject though). And the writing is not always polished. There were a few grammar, typos in the text. Nothing that bothered me that much, or interfered with my reading the story.

SPOILER ALERT
As for the theory of what happened, - in one respect it entirely explains why the hikers left their tent so abruptly and poorly dressed. But I agree with a few other reviewers, it doesn't explain why they then left the environs of the tent, rather than taking steps to resolve the situation, or at least retrieve clothing. The alternative - walking around in -20 degree weather improperly dressed, sure death - doesn't seem sensible or sane. But I think the theory is as good as any other I've read, and so I can recommend this book.

That doesn't mean I'm entirely convinced
