On this basis, the book goes on to explain the relevance of Kerouac and his friends Allen Ginsberg and Gary Snyder to songwriters who emerged in the 1960s. Not only are new, detailed readings of the lyrics of the Beatles and of Dylan given, but the range and depth of the Beat legacy within popular song is indicated by way of an overview of some important innovators: Jim Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Donovan, the Incredible String Band, Van Morrison and Nick Drake.

Some of Coupe's theories are contentious but from this uniquely English perspective they are absolutely thought provoking."

"Watts" it all about, Alan???"

This is a fine publication for several reasons; it does indeed explore the music and poetry of the Beats, BUT it goes forther in showing us much about Alan Watts, a pivotal figure in the whole West Coast Beats scene, and tells us of his differing versions of Zen which he espoused, as a professor and as a clergyman in the Episcopal Church (before he resigned in a bit of a huff over what to believe and what not to believe). I think all could benefit from reading this volume.....and appreciate the musical parts as well!
